Correct me if i'm wrong but 73/74 didn't come from the factory with the 440-4 speed did they? There is a guy that lives around the block from me that has a GTO judge and a 73 charger that apperently came from the factory with a 440 4 speed in it....So he says.. Also another thing that caught my attention was that it had a 904 in it.  :scratchchin: Didn't most of the 318/360 3rd gens come with the 904?

You could still get the 440-4 then but you are correct about the 904.  Check the VIN.

I got a lot of build info from here.

I didn't believe they ever put a 904 behind a big block, but I could be wrong...and usually am! LOL

no 440s 4 speeds on 73/74. 72 was the last year.
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

My apologies.  I was looking at production numbers for 73 and 74 and confused 440-4 as meaning four speed instead of four barrel.

This is waht I thought. Havent gotten over there to check the VIN yet. Haha I was hoping I found some rare 3rd gen.

Ghoste

Still could be rare.  What if the 904 is the part that's wrong and originally it had a 727 in there because it wasn't a four speed car but a 440 automatic?  That was something you could get in 73.

maxwellwedge

Did they even make a 904 with Big Block bolt pattern?? I seem to think no.

Ghoste

No they didn't.  But what I'm saying is, what if the part the guy is right on is the 440 and it was blown up years ago so it was easier to swap in a 318/904 combo for whatever reason.  Long long long shot given the number of them equipped with 318's versus the number sold with big blocks but it's Sunday night and it's still winter so why not do a little dreaming?

teddy1500

400's still had the 4 speed available.

maxwellwedge

Ghoste

Yes and that opens the possibility that he meant 400 four speed but at some point a smallblock auto was swapped in.

RD

if a SB was swapped, he would have to had either:

changed the K member

put it in cockeyed

or used a motor mount swap kit

because a SB will NOT fit on a BB k frame in 73/74 Chargers

I HEAR THAT!!! Mon-Fri just seems to get more and more dull going to school every day. Good thing it's my senior year!!!

I know there is no 904 with the big block bolt pattern.

I don't think the 904 was available behind the 340 either.
I may be schizophrenic but at least I have us!
