Been taking apart the '70 and I removed a round cannister from underneath the battery tray that had vacumn lines running to it. What exactly is this cannister???

It stores vaccum for operating the heater A/C controls.

is that just for the 70 models? I have a 71 A/C car that had the same setup

Tilar

Anything that has vacuum AC/Heater controls or the vacuum headlights should have one.

God must love stupid people; He made so many.

what did they do for the AC with the 68/69 model? just the intake manifold?

Nacho-RT74

my 74 doesn't have the canister... anyway just would drive the doors actuators, not the heater temp control... this is wire controled in my case ( and mostly )
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

I had one under the battery tray of my 71. I wasn't sure what it did or if it worked, so I disconnected it, took it out and just plugged the a/c hose into a vacuum port on the car (I think).

Does it make that much of a difference ? Can they be broken ?

The 70 canister is about 40% of the size of the 68/69 canisters----probably because they had electrically operated headlight doors and so didn't need that much reserve vacuum.  The cans appear to be the same as tomato juice cans.  They oftentimes have rust holes in them.  You can't get the check valve off the can without destroying the can-------you have to cut it off.  They seem to be hard to find on Mopars but you see them on lots of other cars in the junkyard.  Someone sells a repop for the 68/69's for somethiing like $125.00.  I have never seen just the check valve for sale so you could make your own.  So I have wondered if this same part could be found on another make of vehicle.  I was able to clean the one up on my 69 but was just curious.

Call your local Ford dealer and ask for a vacuum canister for a '95 F150.

Ask him to order one in for you and bring your old one with you when you go to look at it.  From what I recall, they're almost the exact same.

Here is one from a 1971 Charger... I think the 1970 is the same, but I'm not 100% sure.  The can is the same as the Ramcharger hood reservior with a different bracket.

Well, doggone.  That takes care of that item.  No need to worry about it anymore.

Hey Bull, I see on this end of the canister 2 hose connectors.  What's on the other side of the canister, 2 or 3 hose connectors? Summit Racing sells plastic ones that are similar for about $20.  I'm restomodding my 68 so originality is of no concern to me.  Just wondering if I have to have the stock version so my h-doors work.  Thanks.

I'm not sure. I haven't purchased one (just doing an FYI) and that's the only picture of it they show. I would imagine it's just like the original ones (supposed to be anyway) and if it is there's nothing on the other end. There's only supposed to be the two you see in the picture.
