Engine Break-In with headers?

I have read a few articles stating not to break in an engine with headers due to the fact that if you run too rich you may damage the coating on the headers. So, do I have to buy regular exhaust manifolds during break in? I already bought tti headers and exhaust. Any suggestions?

I think too lean will damage them more than too rich but it doesn't matter either way because it doesn't answer your question.  You don't know anyone with a set of manifolds or rusty used headers you could borrow for the start up?

Yeah, I'm sorry I meant too lean not too rich..... No, I don't know any one else in my area with MoPar parts. Not too many MoPar guys around me  :shruggy:

If you have no choice, then you have no choice, but it'd sure be a shame to wreck the coating on those new headers.  Not even a local scrapyard huh?

you could try ebay they have exhaust manifolds listed sometimes i wouldn't take the chance of messing up the coating on new headers especially TTI's

kamkuda

I broke my engine in with manifolds and then switched to TTI headers.

well if your engine is going to wear headers in the end anyways, why not richen up the carb to start with? your going to fatten it up sooner or later.

the idea of swapping out the manifolds later sounds stupid. i'd rather swap out the jets.

suntech

Totally agree with NMike here!
If i thought i was on the lean side, there are a hell of a lot more to worry about than the headers!!!! I would make suse i started on the rich side, and go from there!!!
Also set the timing as accurat as you can right away, since that will mess up your EGT aswell.
Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!
