Can anyone recommend a good shipping company If I can make a deal for an engine block and components? Any help would be appreciated.
Also, what sort of packaging is typically used? Does it have to be crated?

St. Louis to Toronto

Thanks
Pete

Get a quote from I think its called YELLOW.... I have had GREAT luck with them.  They do usually want it put on a pallet.  I would have them the shipper crate it, Not really that hard.  Then to get a cheaper rate pick it up at the depot that will save you some $$

Not sure if YELLOW goes to canada.  But some company will

Try fedEx freight. Ask for a discount. They will give you one. I have shipped three or four engines in the last several years. I just put them on a pallet and used four pieces of 1" steel thin bar and some blocks of wood. I bolted the motor to the pallet on each corner. I then put a couple of cheap ratchet straps on it for good measure. I also wrapped them in plastic shrink wrap. I have never had a problem. I shipped a 318 to California about a year ago like that. No problems at all. I also shipped a Ford 6 cyl last summer. It still had the tranny attached. I had a guy ship me a 727 tranny that was just laying on the pallet. He didn't even try to strap it down. It made it.

thanks guys, I'm gonna call around today and find out what the deal is with crating/shipping.

Mike, doesn't sound like its gonna be too much trouble especially if I can find someone to do the crating or if you can use a pallet to strap the block down and maybe a couople of boxrs for the other suff?

I'll keep ya posted

thanks

WOW! -what a difference - FedEx was almost 3 times the price of Yellow !! Not to mention all you have to do with yellow is drop the stuff off at their depot and they'll put it on a pallet for ya!

note to self - NEVER use fedex

thanks for the heads up Blown 70

Well dont thank me just yet.  I this was 2 years ago the last time I used them  I hope they are still good.  Also, I hope you mentioned you could pick it up.  That pry saves the most.  I know it saved me $150 one time for them to just drop it at a port and I could pick it up.

Did you ask FedEx for a discount? Usually they will give you at least a 50% discount. I get 65% and one of my suppliers gets nearly 75%. If you end up using Yellow make sure you ask them for a discount before you drop the motor off. Freight companies almost always give a big discount when asked. If they don't go at least 40% off their standard rate I would be surprised.

My father has a business that he uses yellow freight for and is real happy with them, says they are the cheapest around and dependable.
