Crusing through Ebay for Charger parts and ran across this:

I didn't know anyone produced a Magum 500 center cap that anything but the bullseye. Anyone ever seen one of these on a car?

Ghoste

I don't think the caps were ever produced that way, I think he has just stuck a couple of the Pentastar decals in there.  The decals used to be somewhat popular at one time.  I think Direct Connection may have even sold them.

Charger1973

I had those on my first 73 Charger.   I always assumed they were factory and they looked really old, but everyone here said they were aftermarket when I posted a pic of them.

BigBlackDodge

I have those on mine right now...............but they're very old and showing their age.

You're right!  Some people will try to sell almost anything on E-Junk. :Twocents:

Ghoste

And yet strangely enough, there were no bids on this item in spite of the tasty Pentastar decals.  Perhaps this is one of those items that folks know they can get in the repro world.

There is however a slight difference in the reproductions caps and the origionals though. They aren't the same height.

Ghoste

I'd rather have short ones that look new than crappy looking pitted ones that are the right height though.

69_500

Call me odd, but I'd rather have the correct size on there.

Yeah yeah yeah I know I'm a nerdy numbers guy.

Ghoste

If they aren't side by side can you even tell though Danny?

mopar-or-no-car

yep that is an aftermarket cardboard sticker that was sold in the speed shops in the '80's I have them on my chally! I thought they looked really neat! the pentastar is metallic blue and looks a WHOLE lot better than that god awful gold ring that ma mopar put on them!! Here is a picture of it on my rims!! sorry about the dirt but the car has been in storage for a while!!   :'(

Well actually you can. Its kind of crazy, but its like 1/8th of an inch difference in size. Okay you can go ahead and call me crazy now.

Ghoste

I'd never call you crazy my friend but I have to say that I'm not sure I'd spot 1/8 difference if they were sitting on top of a bench if they were more than a foot apart so I know for sure I'd never be able to tell on a car.  You have a better eye for detail than me, that's all.

69_500

There is a noticable difference in size if they are sitting side by side on a work bench. It was definately easy to spot that when I was looking at 2 of them with Gene up in Michigan. And ever since then I've been staring at them on cars, and such.

Like everything else, once I notice there is something different on 1 car, or in 1 part, I tend to look at it on every other car I look at after that. It all started with little stuff, that progressed into looking at all rear bezels on 500's to see if they are body or stripe color, to looking at what bolt holds down what, to what date code is on what part on a car that was built when, to where overspray is on a survivor car, and the list just keeps on going. Which is probably why in the whole weeknd at St. Louis this year, I really only looked at 3 different cars in the 3 days of the show.

Ghoste

Would you notice though if they were on a car just by looking at them with no other point of reference?  That is no longer or shorter ones nearby that you could compare them to?
I swear to God I am not trying to beat some kind of admittance out of you, the questions are sincere because I was not even aware there was a size difference between the two.

The70RT

Does anyone have the motor wheel corporation caps on theirs? The have a red center and two flags?

Ghoste

No, but they used to be all over the place around here.  It's been closed for several years now but there used to be a Motor Wheel plant in town.  There are still quite a few sets of MW aftermarket wheels on various rides here.

The70RT

I picked these up moons ago. I think they just look cool. I am not sure if I will use them or not since I got an nos set of originals.

I'll admit it is difficult to just eyeball them when they are on a car. I can't do it by just walking by and glancing, that is for sure. I'd say that the guy who is restoring Gene's car could though. He didn't bat an eye about pointing out which one was the right one, and which was the repro. I do know how far on my finger the origional one's go though, so if I'm in doubt, can always squat down next to a wheel and check without even touching anything. Everyone just thinks I'm down there taking pictures.

I like those caps myself, I have them on my R/T clone, I get a lot of positive comments on them.
I put the correct ones on my numbers matching cars   ;D

That's odd, Dan. All the times I've seen your car and I've never noticed that. They look pretty good, IMO, at least they have a little more character than one black circle. It would be cool to know a little history on them. Was it ever a factory option?

If a guy wanted some today I guess he could stick a set of these on his bullseye caps:

The magnum 500 caps come from the aftermarket when you ordered a set of magnums directly from them(not chrysler) I also like those center caps. I had them on my gold 68!
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
