I do not have the piece circled in the picture on my restored A/C heater box. Is it needed? if so what is that part called? Thanks.

Thats called an indak unit, it has coils of wire inside for resistance for the differant fan speeds.
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

Resistor or Wound Wire Resistor - functions as Brian had stated.

The wire coil inside is the resistor that tells the motor what speed to run, which you control from the control head on the dash.

It also acts as a safety cutoff switch if something should impede the motor from running, the wire will get hot and break, cutting off the power to the motor.

Who did the box for you?   Looks like a great job

I had it restored at SMS Mopar. They did an excellent job with a quick turn around.   :2thumbs:

nice box, I am going to restore my ac box here soon. I know that Shakey has done his own in the past and turned out great looking too.  :Twocents:

I'm surprised SMS sent it back to you without one.  Did they assume you had one for some reason or should it have been replaced as part of the resto?  In either case, maybe they have one to sell?

Detroit Muscle Technologies has the complete gasket rebuild set now for the 68-69 Chargers with air conditioning.  I think it's $95.  They even sell a stainless steel screw set to replace the original screws if you want it ($15).  They mention Rustoleum Titanium Paint for the doors.  And suggest glass beading the box.  They have a little write-up on their website concerning the box restoration.  They also sell on EBAY.  I think everyone knows that the dual heater core used on ac cars is available from Classic Auto Air (I think thats right) out of florida.  Don't know if anyone has the ac evaporator core.  If anyone knows about this, could they chime in.  I don't much want to reuse the old one in my car.
