Escaped tiger kills visitor at San Francisco zoo

This story contains corrected information. It was originally reported that four tigers had escaped, but three remained in their pen.

SAN FRANCISCO - A tiger escaped from its pen at the San Francisco Zoo on Tuesday, killing one man and injuring two others before police shot it dead, authorities said.

The three men were in their 20s; they were together and were not zoo employees, San Francisco Police spokesman Steve Mannina said.

They were attacked just after the 5 p.m. closing time outside the zoo's Terrace Cafe on the east end of the 1,000-acre grounds.

It was unclear how the tiger escaped or how long it was on the loose. The zoo, which is open 365 days a year, was evacuated immediately after the attack was reported.

Shortly after the report of the attack, shotgun-wielding police officers and firefighters gathered around the zoo's south entrance, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Firefighters used ladders to shine flashlights into the zoo through dense eucalyptus trees.

Police found the tiger on top of a victim. The tiger then started moving toward a group of approaching police officers, and they opened fire with handguns, Mannina said.

'A tragic event for San Francisco'
The two injured men were in critical but stable condition at San Francisco General Hospital, San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Lt. Ken Smith said. A call to the supervising nurse at San Francisco General was not immediately returned.

"This is a tragic event for San Francisco," Smith said. "We pride ourselves in our zoo, and we pride ourselves in tourists coming and looking at our city."

Authorities did not believe there were any other people attacked, but because it was dark they could not be certain. Investigators remained on the scene and Smith said a thorough sweep of the grounds would be conducted in the morning.

It was not immediately clear what kind of tiger was involved in the attack. The zoo has both Siberian and Sumatran tigers, according to its Web site.

History of maulings at zoo
Officials at first worried that four tigers had escaped, but only one got out of its pen, Mannina said.

Last December, one of the zoo's tigers mauled a zookeeper during a regular public feeding. The 350-pound animal reached through the cage's iron bars and badly lacerated her arm. The zoo's Lion House was temporarily closed during an investigation.

According to the Chronicle, the state ruled that the zoo was responsible for that incident because of the unsafe configuration of the cages.

A fun day turned tragic, Thats sad.
A Gorilla escaped from the Dallas Zoo and the Police shot and killed it.
That was a few years ago.
Luckely no one was hurt.
The City spent 60k on an investigation to try and find out how the animal escaped.
Scary part is, They never really found out how he got out.

Last I heard they're saying someone left the gate open to the pen but they're trying to determine if it was done on purpose or by accident. :o

Well, they shot her dead. Don't know if that's considered "blame" or not but when you're staring at a tiger on the loose the idea of worrying about "blame" and "responsibility" pretty much go right out the window.

If that as in Canada one of two things would happen:

1. The police officers would be blamed for not using less lethal means such as the taser and if the tiger died while being tased, the officers would be blamed for not using non lethal means such as their batons, and if the tiger died from a baton beating, they would be blamed for using less than non lethal means such as arresting it with bare hands and handcuffs, and then if the tiger died they'd be blamed for being there in the first place to which they would be blamed for not being there sooner.

2. The police officers would be arguing over the taxidermist bill and who gets to keep it once it's done being stuffed while sitting around having a few beers telling everyone of their "great hunt".
