Do We Have Or Need A Vendor List Of Reproduction Wing Car Parts?

A383Wing

With all the interest in "making" Daytona or Superbird cars...I was wondering if anyone has started or was going to start a list of people or vendors who make various wing car items for sale. Such as:

Nosecone:  this person or that vendor
Wing ('glass or aluminum): person or vendor again

Etc, etc......see where this is going?

Does anyone else agree or disagree? I'm not trying to promote people or different vendors here, but I have seen a lot of threads asking where to get this or that item.....if we had a "all in one" list, might be nice.   :2thumbs:

And to get the ball rolling, I make an aftermarket vacuum pod headlight switch replacement for the OE in-dash vacuum portion of the headlight switch used in all 68-69 Chargers & the Superbirds. A couple of people here have purchased & used them, and I have one in our Daytona since 1998 when we put the car together. OE headlight switches are hard to find, this is just an aftermarket retro fit item.

A parts vendor list would be nice, but what would we talk about when the occasional new wingcar builder comes around? ;D

Better colors
Cool graphics
better wing shape
more graceful nose
Pistol grip
Nicer seats
More refinements in body
beepbeep horn

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and an ugly vinyl top so you can short cut your body work... lol.

it doesn't matter wich one you build.. its what ever one you like better... personally i think they are both ugly as hell.. the idea behind them is cool but man are they ugly cars.

My Daytona would be Black with a White tail and magnums!

I had a slim shot at an orange with black trim Daytona around '87 but the seller/original owner decided not to sell.

How about a '69 Daytona Convertable?

I liek the Daytonas better for some reason. I usually like the Plymouths more than the Dodges, but the Daytonas are rarer and just cleaner looking IMO.

There are fewer OE Daytonas, and the mods to do it somplete are a little easier.
Noses and wings are about the same, but the rear window is easier on the Daytona if you use a vega plug.
I've been lurking on a forum that covers real and clone cars. It has lots of info, and this is something you really want to research first. Many good points have been brought up here (superbirds have some more refinement and colors). The decision is yours so make sure you do the one that's right for you.

I vote Daytona too. I'm building two of them. One will be a stock 69,and the other will be a modified 70 Daytona/R/T mix. With all the good repro peices,an as original clone can be constructed,or a modified version can be built. Don't skimp on things like zeebars, and headlight pivots, and latch trays. All these peices should be of steel construction. Dayclona makes the best as original peices, but Eric Nelson, and a few other guys are also making usable peices. Although I haven't seen one in person,I did see pics of Danes new wing, and it looks like a decent peice. Jack McGaughy is making as original steel nosecones, and I believe that Gene Gregory may still be producing them also. Dayclona makes an awsome rear window plug, and offers the rear wing in steel, with the weight being comperable to the original wing. Dayclona also offers a steel valence, latch tray, and headlight pivots, and bucket assemblies as original. As far as fiberglass peices are concerned,Dayclonas nosecone is the thickest constructed nosecone, and the fit is acurate,Ted Janaks peices are quality peices, and his timeline for producing them, and getting them to the customer, has improoved greatly in the las few years, however I do not recommend using everything in fiberglass. I don't recomend fiberglass zee bars, headlight pivots/buckets/window plug/or wings. Other than that Janaks peices are very good quality. Stinger also offers a fiberglass kit,but the peices are not the quality of Dayclona,or Janak peices, and the fit is not as acurate, and many peices require a lot of reworking,to make them fit and function. The Vega hatch is an option, for the rear window plug, and there are several threads,on Dodge Charger.com,in their areo car section, that show step by step installation of these plugs. There are also a few guys on there offering some peices. Do not waste your time with the cheaply made kits from Show Cars, they are flimsy poorly made peices, that will require more work to make them work than they are worth. With the reproduction wingcar peices, you do get what you pay for,so if your cheap, thats what you will end up with, and it will show in the finished product! A mix of all the mid to high quality vendors can produce a wingcar that is both durable, and functional for many years to come. Depending on your budget, and what kind of wingcar you want to have,be it an as original,or a modified version. with the right mix of peices, from the right vendors, either is entirely possible.

I read that thread earlier tonight, and Pete (chargervert) did a nice write-up / assessment on the major clone parts vendors.  You can tell he really likes Dayclona's stuff, but overall he was very fair.

I have been researching vendors for some of my upcoming projects.  I plan to get the nose cone & valance for my Daytona from Jack McGaughey:

Not all of the parts he makes are on his website.  Very friendly guy to talk to... not cheap, but quality parts from what I have heard from previous customers.

Below are some pictures that he emailed of the reproduction Daytona front valance...

Ted Janak has made fiberglass "reproduction" parts for winged cars for many years.  His parts might be the way to go for some folks building a clone, while others may be willing to spend the extra $$$ for metal reproduction parts.

As mentioned earlier, Dayclona's new website is up & running.  Mike Goyette offers a wide variety of metal & fiberglass reproduction parts for the Aero Cars, including a few Charger 500 only parts (grille brackets)...

I will probably get some headlight buckets & other related items from Dayclona... they seem to to have the best nose internal parts at the moment.

Hopefully Dayclona will post some larger pictures of their parts on the new website... :P below is one of the thumbnail size ones now used.

I'm still making the wing braces. They're identical to the originals. I had a set of mine and an original set sitting next to them and it was almost impossible to tell them apart. I used an original set loaned to me by bigblocksam for the measurements. I plan to make another batch very soon and hope to keep the price at $90 plus shipping.
I'm looking into stamping the deck lid closeouts early next year. The supply of reproductions out there is drying up since the molds were destroyed a few years ago. I'm checking with a couple of die makers now and I may be able to get them made without spending a lot of cash. Hopefully, that will keep the price down to a reasonable level.
As my new shop gears up in 2008, I really want to get more involved in making all types of parts.
I think the next problem is going to be in getting the vega plugs. The guys with complete vega bodies are reluctant to part with the hatchback since the car becomes basically worthless once that part is removed. I know where there are five or six vegas, but he wants to sell the complete cars. There is a company making fiberglass vega hatchbacks, but that would be a move in the wrong direction. No glass, no moldings and no way to attach it properly. We may be looking at having to use the reproduction steel plugs within the next few years.

This was kinda what I was getting at....now is someone going to make a list of everyone that makes or sells these items? Maybe make it on a word processor and keep it for later posting....mainly because I know this thread will eventually get buried.

Larry, do you plan to continue making all of the parts that you've made in the past? I don't want to duplicate any of the parts that the other members are making. Of course, I wouldn't even attempt to make those a-pillar trims. Those are a work of art.
I still think that someone needs to build a complete working nose assembly. While the price would be a little high for some of the low-buck guys, many people might save up and go the simplest route. Bolt on and go.
The problem as I see it now is making all of these hodge podge parts fit and work together. This is where most of the guys are giving up.
Imagine the look on people's faces when they open up those boxes containing their "complete" Daytona kit from (insert supplier's name here) and see all of those loose unassembled, poorly fitting parts. It's an absolute joke. No drawings, no hardware, not even a thank you card.
In order to keep the price down and make the assembly easier, someone would need to build as many of the individual parts as possible. I haven't really thought out the total cost of building a complete nose, but it seems like if a guy could build them and keep the price at around 5k, people would probably step up and buy one. Of course a steel version would up the price at least another $3500 to $4000.
I realize that this is a rehash of an earlier conversation, but it seems like we're seeing more and more guys interested in building these cars and they don't have a decent place to start really. Part of the reason that I haven't gone any further on my own project is not having the time to spend to try to make these lousy parts work together. Maybe in 2008.
Any comments or new suggestions?
