440 emblem on a '68? Update w/pics!!

Would this be too tacky?  I know the numbers crowd will cringe at the thought, but here goes.  There is no engine call out on a '68 unless you happen to be a happy hemi owner.  I get more people asking me in the middle of traffic if the car is a 440 than if it's a hemi.  I've always liked the look of the hemi emblem on the doors.  So I was thinking of having the same emblems made for my car, but in place of 'hemi' I'd have '440'.  It would look like a stock piece.  They would be put on with mastic, so as not to drill the doors.  So what do you guys think?  Bob

If you aren't drilling Holes, I say have at it. They can always be taken back off, but then again, it is YOUR car, drill the holes if you want, make it your own!

They look kinda cool on some of the cars. I have seen a few.

Wouldn't interest me, but I think 68-70 Chargers are perfection ANYWAY so I don't think they need add ons.

Most (non-mopar nuts) people are clueless about what an R/T could have under the hood, but they remember the numbers, 383/426/440.  Tons of people ask if it's a 383 and are surprised when I tell them it's a 440.

In that case, if you think it's important, a small badge would be the most subtle way of doing it. I always hate to see anything mess with the flow of the 2nd generation Charger body design but I suppose a small badge would work. Are you talking about the '66-'67-type badge?

I'm thinking of having a badge fabricated to look just like the one that would have come on a '68 hemi car except for the lettering.  Bob

I did it in 79, along with side mounted R/T badges. Hell I did not have any other chargers around, or
mopar people in my town that I knew of. If you look at the FSM it shows the Emblems for Coronet
and Charger, so I thought they were supposed to be there   :rotz: :rotz:  drilled holes and everything.
The 440 emblems I put on the doors right where the Hemi emblems go, they were off a Coronet 440.
To tell you the truth, nobody gave me any shit about it, probably because all of my friends were
Cheby and Ferd guys   :shruggy:  and they would have no clue. But after about 6mo I did have
a guy at the track tell me ''you know those did not come stock'' is when I found out. That was
fine, I did not like the looks of the big R/T emblems much anyway, so I took the 440 emblems
off at the same time.

I get the same thing Bob.........  but most seem to ask me if its a 440 6pk car     ummmm
no, the 6pk did not come out in a charger till 70, I find myself saying this way to often.........

Anyway, like I said I did have them for a while, but they did not do much for me, But I
found that out after I drilled holes and put them on. Hell I get people at shows looking at
the engine asking what I have in it  ::)  if I am there its hard not to laugh, I am not one
for staying at the car much, but my wife answers the question all the time.

Hi Dan!!  I was just thinking that a emblem that looked exactly like would have come on a '68 R/T except for a change in the lettering (that would identify what's under the hood) would be kinda cool.   Bob

Good pic Ron,,,
Before I bought my Charger,,,,14 yrs ago,,,,it had a HEMI in it,,,,,and the prior owner had HEMI tags on the doors........
The car is originally a 440 car,,,,
When i bought the car,,,,,,there were no HEMI tags on the door,,,but the holes were still there,,,,,,
I didnt want any water to get in there,,,,so,,,i bought some of the 440 emblems,,,,,and used some 2 sided tape to hold them on,,,,,"till i paint the car next year",,( which never seems/seemed to happen)

My car is also a stripe delete car,,,,,,
I really like the stripe look,,,,,so i ordered a stipe without the R/T part cut out,,,,,,,(just a solid stripe),,,,,,,,,and then put the emblems back on in place where the emblem holes are....
Eventually,,,,I am going to repaint the car,,,,and have the emblem holes in the door filled,,,,,,and make the stripe portion correct,,,,,,,
mine is not "stock",,appearing,,,,,,,,but i didnt want it to look funky either,,,,,hopefully it looks ok......

RECHRGD

Thanks for all the input guys!  RD, your car is awesom!  Does anyone have a close up picture of an original rectangular HEMI badge and the exact measurments?  Thanks,  Bob

That would be much better than drilling holes, obviously. The only thing about magnets is getting the particles stuck to the back that scratch the paint.

I thought there was.  I have one stuck on my toolbox and I was sure there was a small gap along the back edge although just going by my poor memory I thought it was more than that.  No big deal then.

Maybe I am a little late here, but...
I have looked for the exact same thing, especially when i am a bigger fan of the 440 than the hemi.
I looked for emblems to put on the door where the HEMI emblem sits on the -68.

Then I found this good looking 440 MAGNUM emblem that was said to come from the 67 Charger?
I bought it and was happy.

Then one day when I red in my 68 service manual, I stumbled over this:

:2thumbs:

...now...why doesnt the book show a pic of the square hemi emblem?

Just because something appeared in the graphics manual doesn't mean that it ever appeared on a car. The way the page is shown on the picture may hide a CANCELLED stamp. I have never seen a production Charger with that emblem nor any other emblem except HEMI.

PocketThunder

I was going to catch up with the times and make a 7.2L emblem for my Charger doors.  or is it 7.3L now, lets see, 440, 0.40 over =  :scratchchin:  :shruggy:

The 2nd gen fsm's also have pics in them that clearly depict portions of a 1st gen.  I think some of those drawings were less about prefect representation than they were general trim placment.

Nope, no cancelled stamp in my book. ;D
And there is no drawings of the first gen, its second gen all the way.

So it prolly was an option.
Once I have seen the V8 emblem on...but I have never seen the 440 magnum or 426 hemi emblem on any picture.
The square hemi emblem though is quite common.

Check your drawings for rear 1/4 panel ornamentation.  That for one sure looks like a 67 with 68 taillights to me.  There is also a disclaimer in the front of those manuals and parts catalogs that lets Chrysler off the hook for any mistakes inside them so until I see some documented survivors with those emblems I'm not going to put any faith in them being available just because the service manual portrays them in a line drawing.  Hell, the 70 fsm has a line drawing of a 68 grille to show where the vacuum actuators go for the headlight doors.  :shruggy: (of couse they also have pics of the electric motor placement on another page so all is well)

Yea, and it's not always the guy's fault who's asking. I remember back when I was a kid and first asked about one of those stupid Olds 442s. Every other muscle car in the country at the time that had numbers on it somewhere was advertising the engine size. Not that thing.

Just found this older thread.  I have a 69 Charger that will have a 440 Stroker in it.  I want to put an emblem on the door in the vein of the Hemi Badge, but thinking of 440+6, or 512+6.  I remember seeing a vendor at the Indianapolis MOPAR show 2 or 3 years ago who designed custom emblems.  Anyone know who it was, or if anyone else is doing this kind of work?

I'm glad you revived this thread Mike!  I got side tracked with engine upgrades shortly after this thread died and frankly, forgot about it.  I was at a GoodGuys show in Spokane today and started asking around.  I was given the name of a company in Beaverton, Oregon called "CON2R" www.con2r.com.  I just got off the phone with them and they are going to call me on Monday or Tuesday with a quote.  I'm sure it will be pricey, but he said that they were starting to go after the onesy twosy type stuff, so we'll see.  I'll post what info I have when I get it.   Bob

After you get 440 badges on your fender the question changes from "What engine do you have?" to "Does it really have a 440 in it?"

I bought a pair of brushed "440 Magnum" emblems off ebay but I'm not sure I'm going to use them.  (I was hoping they'd look close to what R2 has on his doors.)  They seem a little big and would require drilling.

Well I got them and their on.  I like how they look, but was disappointed with the quality.  I put them on with mastic so had to cut off the pins.  I had to be very careful and use a dremel tool to do the cutting.  They are made out of aluminum and are very fragile.  The casting is not perfect and the '0' tilts out about 1/16" from the other numbers.  I had to break it off and glue it on separatly to make it work on the drivers side.  The flat black paint used for the accents flakes off if you look at it wrong.  Other than that, I love em!  What do you guys think??  Bob
