I'm sorry to hear that.  I had higher hopes for her.

Jamie is in a kids show isn't she?  Wonder what the producers are going to do about that?  My guess is, she just shot her career in the foot.

I completely agree....
But that's the most important reason to talk about this... kids as young as 6 years old watch her show, Zoe 101.
Those same kids are going to hear about her pregnancy one way or another - be it the news, the internet, those stupid gossip rags in the grocery stores...

Don't you think it's important for parents and grandparents to at least have a head's up about this so that they can deal with it however they see fit?
Ignorance is not bliss when you're talking about what your kids are up to.

Is this place the right place to talk about it? Hmmmm No, but it doesn't hurt to have a quick mention of it in the Off Topic section - if only to let anyone know that hasn't heard already.

Old Moparz

I see a few varied opinions on Britney's sister & could personally care less about a celebrity's personal life, but there is another good reason to mention this topic. (Even on a car forum.) It might bring some attention to anyone on here as a parent, or potential parent, that maybe the whole idea of "hero" or "idol" worship ain't such a great idea for your kids. I'm not criticizing or being hypocritical, I've been a fan of certain celebrities as a kid, & still hold some value to some of it, but not in the same way.

My point is, maybe if your kid understands the difference between entertainment & real life, they won't try to emulate. Better to show them that the people on TV are just life-like cartoons that are just as dumb.

Oh yeah, it's a lot more than just age.  Plenty of 38yo mothers still produce trailer-trash kids too.

The whole Spears clan just rubs me the wrong way.
The Simpson girls or Christina Aguelera could do all the same trashy songs/clothes/publicity/videos, and yet none of them ever irked me the way Britney did.

Isn't it  a little hypocritical to tell your teenagers not to do the same things you were doing at their age ? All the ads about not smoking , doing drugs, sex, drinking , etc. then ,  worst of all ,  doing them even now . Maybe when you are sitting and having those drinks this holiday season you should think about the example YOU set for your kids.

I hear you.

But the problem is huge.
Many parents are setting the good examples with their own lives and STILL losing the war against the media/culture's influence on their kids.

Ghoste

It's a complex issue.  As a guitar player (a very amateur one but being sensitive to my senstive side), I've always had a strong stance against censorship of any kind.  Then I had kids.  :o
It isn't so clear cut to me anymore.  I try hard to balance the things in life which I enjoy in moderation and have a right as an adult to do against the values that are important for me to teach my children.  I like beer and I don't think it's wrong for my daughters to know that.  I do however, very often explain that it is an adult drink and we are quick to point out the dangers of alcohol to our kids.  I sincerely doubt that my kids have ever witnessed my wife or I drunk although they know what drunkeness is.  Hypocritical?  Perhaps, but still not the same as ignoring my role as an example and staggering around my household on a daily or even a biannually basis. (or ever)  Am I a saint or perfect parent?  Absolutely not and no one is.  Of course parents will screw up in front of their children just as kids are going to discover the vices of life on their own.
Now continuing with that, I expect a certain responsability from the media and world at alrge when it comes to the messages that are laid before my kids.  I don't subscribe to the Playboy channel because even though I enjoy women and sex, I don't want to expose a 10 and 7 year old to those questions just yet.  I do however, subscribe to the Family Channel which is a Canadian channel which combines programs from Disney and Nickolodeon.  My daughters both like Zoey 101 and we have purchased some of the Zoey 101 crap for them.  Now one of their idols is pregnant so how do I explain that to them?  I'm not so naive as to believe that either of my daughters will be ignorant about the opposite sex when they turn 16 but I sure as hell don't plan to encourage them to try everything about it either and don't worry about the consequences.
It's my responsability to teach them right from wrong but if the Spears family are going to ask for my hard earned dollars to entertain my kids and they do it under the guise of any kind of commonly accepted North American family value system, then they share some obligation too and so do her handlers and producers.
This could be the preachiest thing I've ever posted.  Sorry rant off now.

I agree and I think it's also wise to teach your kids to avoid hero worship. I think that's where a lot of people get into trouble because they become devistated and question their beliefs when a person they look up to messes up. I try to teach my kids to not mimic people but rather to stick to a set of values and try to learn from the mistakes of others, even the people they might idolize. People can be good role models but everyone screws up and it's important for kids to learn that it's not people but individualized patterns of good behavior we should try to emulate.

IMHO the problem isn't the media.  It's the volume.
It's the fact that the media is putting more into our kids' heads than the real world does anymore.

Look at NASCAR (which is sort of an extreme example of the media in the whole culture):
I think it's currenly a disgusting orgy of advertisements that has gone off the deep end and it gradually made me stop watching the sport entirely.

So should NASCAR start picking & choosing sponsors all the time (censorship)?  Of course not.  The fact that there are beer ads on some cars doesn't bother me.

But the problem is that the sheer volume  of ads everywhere has gone totally off the leash.  I can't tell what color a car is painted anymore underneath all those ads.   If you take your kid to a race, you have the urge to start wanting certain ads/products censored simply because you can't possibly shield the kids (or even just limit their exposure) from ANY of the sport's advertising anymore.

I think with children that if you instill a solid foundation from a young age, then the bad kind of just turns in a joke. Take that from a single father of an 18 year old Honor Student. And he's not perfect but he doesn't drink, smoke, do drugs, fight or ever been in any kind of trouble.
