Steering coupler roll pin/shift tube question

I inadvertently pulled the coupler away from the steering gear without removing the roll pin. My question is.....is it possable that I didn't have one? I gently pulled back on my column in the car without first removing the snap ring (@#!#@). There is no damage to the spline and no pin on the floor or in my coupler. Another question regards my shift tube. Its attached to the column but not hooked up to anything. Is this commonly the case on "restored" cars?
