Ike Turner Dies at Age 76

His death was announced by Jeanette Bazzell Turner, who married Mr. Turner in 1995. She gave no cause of death, but said he had had emphysema. Mr. Turner was best known for discovering Anna Mae Bullock, a teenage singer from Nutbush, Tenn., whom he renamed Tina Turner. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue made a string of hits in the 1960s before the Turners broke up in 1975.

Tina Turner Refuses To Pay Tribute to Ike

Singing superstar Tina Turner is refusing to comment on the passing of her ex-husband Ike Turner, choosing to acknowledge his death in a brief statement. Tina was married to Ike for 18 years, but the union was largely an unhappy one as a result of his cocaine addiction. His drug problem turned the star into a violent control freak, and in Tina's autobiography, she details the abuse she suffered at the hands of the bluesman.

She even accused him of deliberately burning her with cigarettes and coffee. They divorced in 1976, and Tina's representative claims the pair has been out of touch for decades. The spokesperson says, "Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made."

Well, as a person Ike fell short, but he did make some cool music over the years. Can't say he'll be missed though, oh well.   :shruggy:

Now Tina on the other hand, Tina is hot.   :D

I was lucky enuff to see their show in 1969 when "Rolling on the River" was in the top ten. my first real R&B show,... high energy would be an understatement, strangely enough i saw them not at the Fillmore West or Winterland like all the other shows back then, but in a huge Barn in Cotati Ca. with Hot Chocolate opening, if i remember correctly PG&E was the other act. Ike mostly played a scratch rhythm with some short blues solos on a Strat... i was 12.

Cool, I'd have liked to have seen them back then, but I was only 7 years old in 1969. Seeing Tina Turner shakin' it like that probably would have scared the crap out of me at the time.

Proud Mary  aka "Rolling on the River"r..

those orange amps were the hot ticket in 1968, by 1970 it was the Custom amps... the back up singers, horn section and choreography were pretty novel at that time... though Janis had great pipes and delivery, The Ike and Tina Revue as it was known were light years better and far more professional. the only other woman in that league was Grace Slick... at that time..

If I ever see a guy do something like that to a woman I will efficiently beat the worthless SOB silly. There's no excuse for it. If I could go back in time to the '77 Grammys that MF would have already been dead for 30 years. I've got nothing good to say about him.

Ike's "Rocket 88" was widely acknowledged as the first rock n roll song.

Believe, me there are. It's just that a real man knows better than that and doesn't act up on it.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

I have to admit there is one story I heard where I condoned the guy hitting a "woman." He was walking down a sidewalk in the "alternative lifestyle" town of Eugene, OR when he crossed paths with a pair of women who were together (in more ways than one). The larger woman of the two decided she wanted to impress her partner by spitting on this guy as they passed. He immediately smacked her and knocked her to the ground and said, "if you want to act like a man you'd better learn to fight like a man."

Anyway, there's a difference between defending yourself and doing what Ike did.

But imagine if she stood up and kicked his ass.  :o

since spitting can be considered assault and battery...   I believe taking action to ensure it doesnt continue would be legal
