i know this must seem like a dumb question , but seeing all / reading some the posts about the CHARGER 500 in the AREO car section . so can someone please explain what a CHARGER 500 is and what it has to do with WING cars ?

Charger 500 was Dodge's attempt to try and win more nascar races.Ford brought out the Talladega and Mercury's Cyclone spoiler.Which led to Dodge going all out aerodynamically with the Daytona. There is a lot more to the story with many books printed covering the aero wars of the time.

In 69 correct ! 1970 it was just a Charger with a badge .

Ford Talladega had its 429 and its Aero styling advantage. And Chrysler took the 68 charger design and improved it for 1969 by adding the aero parts less wing that later found its way to the daytona. They decided they could gain the needed MPH from the 426 with aerodynamics

The 500's were Chryslers first really true AERO car, in that they designed it specifically to compete on NASCAR and win. And WIN it did. Compiling more wins than the Daytona and the later Superbird. However I'll admit those numbers a scewed a bit, as the 500 also raced in more races than either of the later wing cars, as it was ran on all tracks in 69, and then on the smaller tracks in 1970. But either way it was a sucessful design.

I looked at this and initially groaned, but I do have an oddball 500 question:  Why didn't Dodge put a small "ducktail" spoiler on the backs of the 500?  It wouldn't be without precedent--the '67 cars wore them...were they too much drag, or were they just never tested?  I'm assuming that the car wasn't stable enough or the Daytona would have just had the nose cone.  I know they helped stabilize the new airflow pattern, but a small kickup would have helped the 500, no?

I think NASCAR only allowed the spoiler in '67 because the 1st-gen Chargers needed the stability.
It wasn't something that NASCAR really wanted to do.

I've often wondered whether NASCAR might have continued allowing aero-warrior models farther into the 1970s if the Mopar wing cars hadn't appeared.

The wing cars were too much to ignore for anything calling itself a "stock" racing series.  Honestly I don't know how Mopar expected to get those things into the races.  But imagine if there had been more of a "Charger Talledega" type of thing after the C500 instead . . .

Randy, The 66-67 Charger, even though it was a fastback, tended to lift in the rear.  It would not stay glued
to the track at the speeds the HEMI was capable of propelling it.  The 68 Charger, with its new shape brought
new hope - but the new Ford outdid it.  It had trouble with rear lift too.  Dodge corrected the problem with
a fastbast "plug" to fill in the backlight area & borrowed a Coronet grille to  help troubles in the front that were
discovered during wind tunnel testing.  Upon seeing that the 500 still wasn't all they had hoped for, production
of the Daytona (slated for the following year) was sped up.  The rear wing was added to balance out the gains
provided by the nosecone.

And if you look at the 2nd gen in profile, you can see the stylists did add a slight kickup to the rear edge of the decklid.  I'm sure that in the stylist world, it was likely felt that such was sufficient?

i wonder if the 1970 "Hurst" charger with it's larger rear spoiler figgured into any racing plans... of course it wasn't produced...

gotta love Bob, he still around?.. workin for toyota last i heard..

Neat 70 Hurst concept charger picture. They had another Hurst concept charger for 1969 The Badera Charger

Is that a predecessor of the Air Grabber on the hood of that '69 Hurst??

:scope:

I had to do a double-take on the rear of that Badera, almost looks like the rear lip was removed or smoothed over.  But I think it must be just the viewing angle and stripes.

Ghoste

I believe the 69 was actually called the "Madera" Charger and Geno, I think you're right, it does look like a 70-71 style scoop on there.
As for the 70 Hurst concept and the different rear lip, I think Hurst was just into designing fiberglass add-ons that were easy to install and sell to the car companies.

Typo error on my part. Your right Ghoste its Madera Charger

Also the 70 Hurst 300 asides from the wingcars and the A12 cars.Has origins to creative industries. The hoods and trunklids where supplied by them.I see one of there cars on my route. He asking $10K.Will these cars soon sky rocket in price to.With the creativeIndustries pedigree

Interesting question.  I think they'll go up but I don't know if they'll skyrocket.  Certainly they should outperform other C-bodies from an investment standpoint but my guess is that the Hurst connection will always be a much much bigger deal than Creative supplying the add-ons.  I just can't picture people coming to associate them with the aero cars too much.  :Twocents:
But the thing I've learned most from doing auctions is that I don't know jack about car values.

i posted a '70 300 hurst and a cheap convert in the e-bay section, combining them would give someone with the means a hurst 300 convert.. hint hint..  :icon_smile_wink:
