Well I had another '66 Charger...

FastbackJon

So earlier this year I get a line on an original paint/interior blue/blue '66 383 Charger about 150 miles from me. Been sitting for 20 years, outside with the engine out, not touched at all, but still looked in decent shape.

http://firstgenregistry.com/list/indv.php?year=66&pic=3667675

Contacted the lady owner, she said she really hated to sell it but she wanted to see it restored. I re-assured her that I've had five of them, know the cars inside and out, and restoration would not be a problem.

So I made a reasonable offer and she accepted. She said she just wanted to see it restored and back on the road. So I just had to get a truck and trailer and get down to pay and get it. So we set a date on when I'd be down and a couple days before the date she emails me telling me that she hates to do this but it is going to a family member instead, and that they are going to restore it. Needless to say I wasn't happy, and let her know that, nicely of course. Didn't hear anything back from her after that.

So six months go by, and what do I see on craigslist in a town 30 miles from where she lives?

THE SAME CAR!

http://spokane.craigslist.org/car/499706849.html

Looks like they've done nothing but pull it out of the mud and put on the hood. They have it priced WAY above what it's worth, just trying to make a quick buck. Makes me sick. Especially since no one in the family touched it for the last 20 years, and only until after I was about to get it did one of them step in and decide they "wanted" it, and not even for the car's sake, only for the quick money they thought they could make off of it.

WHOA!!!!   $9900 for that car seems way too high.  :rotz: That won't be a "quick" buck for them...... if you ask me it will take a long time to get that kind of dough :scratchchin:   Sorry to hear that you got sideswiped on the deal.

LMAO 10 grand for an unrestored 1st gen that probably has some serious rust underneath. Good luck with that sale.

That sucks Jon! :flame:  Probably her son or grandson watched Barrett Jackson once and figured they had a goldmine there.  Looks like maybe a 2K to 3K car to me.   Later, Bob

E-mail her a copy of the ad...

Agreed.

I wonder if she knows it's getting flipped.
From what you say, that's not what she wants.

At the same time, you can tell her that they are asking way too much. Nicely of course.

Of course, if she sold it outright, she doesn't have a say in things, but still.
In her shoes, I'd be right pissed off.

There is a pretty decent 66 361 automatic car not far from me, gold in and out and apparently pretty much complete, even has A/C. The guy wants a lot for the car TO ME but having a 66 and a 73, I have all I can say grace over anyway.

Looks like it might make a decent car, if anyone needs contact info, let me know.

I wouldn't mind having the car, but I have two and have no place nor money to own another, PLUS if I by another, I want a 68-70. Have a "set" so to speak.

I had a similar thing happen.
The original owner of a 1970 Barracuda ragtop with /6 pulled the car out of his pumpkin patch in the back 40, and put it on the side of the road with a for sale sign.
I was the first person to stop and ask what the selling price was.....$400.
Not having a dime on me at the time, I told the seller I'd pay the amount - gladly - !
All I needed was a couple of minutes to get to an ATM to grab the cash. I even went so far as to get a bill of sale written up, and signed.
I took down the for sale sign too.
Needless to say, in the 15 minutes it took me to get the cash, he had another offer....for a lot more money.

He wouldn't even come to the door to face me.....

Similar story, but on a 67 firebird. I talked the guy down from $3K to $2k and I wrote up a bill of sale and went to the ATM and gave him a $300 deposit.

I came back the next night to pick up the car and it was gone. He had his mommy face me. The story was some BS that his dad, who she claimed did not know the 30 yr old son had sold me the car, sold it to someone on the spot for $2,500.

Leasson learned: Can't trust anyone even with a deposit/bill of sale. If you want it...have the cash in hand or get the pink slip/title at the time you give the deposit.

Did you see this one, looks like it may be a good deal...not that far away

That sucks Jon.  I know you would have done the car and the lady selling it proud and the insult to injury is that if they can't get rich quick off the car, there's a good chance it'll get scrapped.

If the family realizes they can get more taking it apart than sellin as is, that thing will never see the restoration the owner wanted :brickwall:

I can't help but chuckle when people say they want their car restored , but they can't take the time to close the drivers door, or the decklid - like this car could have benifited from.

thats sucks the way they did you Jon. Everyone on here knows that car is not worth anywhere close to that price. If anyone deserves the car that would be you, I know how you like those 1st gens and I know you'd fix it up and not actually let it sit rotting out.

I try not to play games with things I'm serious about, so I would suck it up, and send him an email, or leave a message during the day saying, I had wanted to restore that car, etc... and made an offer for ....... and if it doesn't sell and you would be interested, please call me at ...... and put it behind me.  If I was willing to pay more then I would say that also.  Good Luck, and yes that sucks as you've heard a few times before.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

JR

Sorry to see that. Nothing is an annoying as this.

I got done the same way on a 64 Belvedere 2dr. The guy gave me a price, the very next day I come back with money, and suddenly he no longer wants to sell it. I bet it's still sitting in the same spot in the woods with the rear glass shot out. :brickwall:

It's a good reminder to not approach someone about a car though without money in hand. That gives them no time to think it over or change their mind.

JON , what was the agreed price you were going to buy it for ? that way we could all Email this smuck and offer way less than what you were going to originaly pay . kind of a reverse scam .

my guees is the family member didnt pay squat for the car , he just found out grammy was seling the car and heard of a CHARGER selling for BIG $$$ and thought he struck gold .  :smilielol: my guess it that this is only worth $2500.00 - $3000.00 tops .

Jon is a kind of fastback saviour of the northwest so there's more to it than just moving on.  If the guy who has it now can't get the oilstrike he seems to want for it and decides to crush it or something, well, you get my point.  It's obviously just conjecture but at least with Jon there is no question the car would be saved just as he will continue saving other 1st gens.

Is not family related but somekind similar... Now this jewel is out of the country. My version of story has one conclusion. If I can't restore it NOBODY AROUND ME will have it.
