How many Chargers have you scrapped?

in the process of building my car, i have so far scrapped two cars ( both 69 ), and taken alot from a third one (68).

i am just wondering how many chargers have donated vital organs to keep other cars alive.

Mike DC

Are we counting cars that were already in commercial junkyards or not?

That really colors the situation.

Once they've been bought by commercial scrappers, those cars are generally never coming out again no matter what.  So I've been a lot more willing to hack on those cars over the years than I am with privately-owned Mopar hulks.

Keep up the good work. Mines worth at least $10 more thanks to you scrapping those two.  I haven't scrapped any yet but I've only owned two. I'm still a youngin (kinda).   The one that died was a 71 se with a 383/727.  The motor and trans went to a good home.

I personally wrecked one back in the 80's, but managed to save a few parts that a few members on this site have in their cars now.  :yesnod:

I scrapped a 1970 in the early 80's after I had gotten some needed parts from it. I also contributed to the scrapping of a 1969 a couple of years ago. I took parts from it for my '68 & a friend of a friend cut up the rest for some sheet metal & frame rails he needed.

No Chargers but a '69 Plymouth Satellite Mod Top donated a lot of parts to my Charger R/T's resto. It was complete but unrestorable as it was rotted from front to back and top to bottom.

i have scrapped 4... one was a very badly burned 69 that still had a good tail panel and one door, the other was a turquoise 68 that has 100 bullet holes in it, no suspension, no rear end, no motor/trans.. but had some good interior. 3rd was the worst 68 R/T you've ever seen in your life. the tail panel fell off this car on the one hour trip home. never to be seen again. i took everything possible off of that car, except the power window regulators...   :brickwall: .. i gave them all to my buddy who scraps them, i couldn't personally take them there myself.. 4th was a 70 R/T i got for $300.. it was insane rough, but looking back, it was complete, and COULD have been restored.. it was hemi orange with black/black.. no motor.. that car had every single little piece dismantled from it, there was nothing left to crush, including bits of frame rail.. and before you guys think i killed a bunch of chargers.. lol.. i have had over 120, so do the math.. pretty low percentage..  :nana:

Yea, Trav, that's not nearly as many as I might have thought. Me? I have scrapped 0. But then I've only owned three.

I saved my R/T SE that was in a yard on it's way to be crushed, but i stripped two in other yards for the parts i needed, one was a '70 charger 500 for the 318 drivetrain the other was a '69 SE for the black Interior and various bits... both of those were hit hard & i doubt they survived.

Highbanked Hauler

only one and I never saw so much rust on one car but I did save anything that was useable.

I have personally scrapped out 12 first generation Chargers but all were way beyond saving and I got most of the useables off them.  Many went to their final squashing in the bed of a pickup so when I scrap them they need to be scrapped.  Not one I would try to save - even now.  Well maybe one; a 383 four speed car that is now living in several other cars.

Just 6T9 CHGR

I helped a friend cut up a 69 in the late 90's....actually used a sawsall to cut the  tail light panel off in front of the marker lights....quarter panels did an ugly bow when it was off

Only part I got off that car was the rear speaker fader switch... :rotz:

Well I didn't buy a faded blue 68 383 2bbl for $500 as it was just beat to death with dings over EVERYTHING, but in hindsight it was mostly rust free.  :brickwall: The other was a green on green 69 383 magnum that was owned by an uncle but he said to pass as it was a rust bucket. As far as I know both were parted out so I sorta scrapped out two by not buying them. :shruggy:

I bought one that was smashed from the rear bumper to the rear of the door jam. I took every thing that was savable and junked the rest. It was a 70 B5 blue 440 R/T automatic. I used to drive by it all most every day and no one knew who owned it. ( It was in a parking lot of a apartment complex) One night on my way home I seen a tow truck hooking it so I stopped and asked where it was going. The driver told me the new property owner gave him 200.00 to get rid of it I gave him another 100.00 to take it to my house.

While I didn't actually take it to the crusher myself, I'm pretty sure it didn't make it many days after that pic was taken.
I do regret parting out that car. :'(

I bought this 4-speed SE sight unseen a few years ago, with intentions of stripping off it's useable parts & crushing it...I just can't do it.

I bought it a trunk lid this summer, to keep it's spirits up & in return, it's helping me out by holding spare hoods-n-things. ;D

1 '69 winter beater, paid $300 at a used car lot, got 3 years and 20,000 miles out of it. Then the rear springs came thru the trunk floor and the block was cracked. Had it sold for $100 but the guy backed out when a brake line broke as he going to drive it home. I pulled the grill assy and then called the scrapyard.

1 '70 that was hit hard in front, was going to make into a trailer but then I needed a rear end. Kept behind the garage for a few years and then it started to get nasty. It was pretty well stripped by then.
Have you seen my old '69 Charger??

1) 1969 Charger 383 2bbl/auto, wrecked in the front. Bought for $200, sold $600 worth of parts off of it...and sold it back to the guy I bought it from. Who sold it to a scrapyard.
2) 1969 Charger SE -318/auto, bought for $100. From same guy as above. Had every option known to man, including luggage rack, cruise control, leather seats. (No sunroof). Completely rusted out.
3) 1971 Charger R/T, traded for a Dodge van I had. Bought all the parts I needed to restore this car, then ended up trading everything to a guy...for a 4:10 Dana 60. HE parted this car out, and definately made money!

Scrapped a 68, a 70, and a 66 but they were all a very long time ago and they were each pretty rotted.  They gave parts for a number of cars.

The70RT

1- 70 I bought in like 1980. It was rust free and sat at a body shop ready for paint after a guy sanded and primered it. There was an acident on the corner where it was at and someone plowed the right rear quarter before it got painted. He took it back home and I got it from the guy for 75 bucks. I stripped it down and put the 383 HP a 69 that I sold. I got almost all the body parts that I took off still. It was a white bucket seat car with black & white hounds tooth interior.  :brickwall:

I have one I am on the fence about cutting up. It is a 69 and is severely rotted from under the dash to the rear. Even the perches are rotted. I keep wanting to wait and see what new parts come out to possibly save it.

71ChallengeHer

I never scrapped a Charger. I sold my 69 Charger to get us out of debt my ex-husband put us in. :brickwall: I did scrap my 70 Barracuda that was totaled. :'(

Dennis K

I scrapped out 4 myself. It was a  long time ago and 2 of them were not fixable even by todays standards. One was very rusty and in a rollover, MM1 bronze, black top and interior, 383 4v car. I used a lot of parts off of that one. Next was a red 318 car with a white interior with a buddy seat. If I found the same car today it would probably be restorable. I don't remember how much rust was on it since I only used the fenders and sold some of the white interior parts. It was a $50 parts car in the late 80s. Next was a car I bought for parts for $350, some moron made it into a custom "El Camino" type vehicle and it looked hideous. It was begging to be put out of its misery, so I did.  I saved the front clip and doors and all the good parts off of it, sold the AM 8-track setup for $50, and scrapped the rest. It was a factory black car with a blue interior, 383 2v, no vinyl top. Probably was a beauty before it was butchered. Last one was a JJ1 gold car with gold interior and green vinyl top, accordiing to the fender tag it was a 383 4v 4-speed car. If I would have had any idea they were so rare at the time, I would have saved it, but it was VERY rusty and would have needed every piece of repro sheet metal available now plus a whole lot that aren't, and back then there was almost nothing available for Chargers yet. All these were 68s, and they all contributed to the restoration of my hemi 4-speed car that's in my garage now. That reminds me, I haven't posted any pics of it in a while. I'll get to it soon.

Just one, a '70. Car was already gutted, & the tail panel & trunk floor were already cut out of it. The guy who had it was gonna scrap it, & just said "take what you want & pay to have it towed out of here." A buddy & I picked clean what we could at the time & everything we could put in his van.
If I had a sawzall, I would have come home with a lot more usable body parts. I got a lot of usable parts, including a mint grill & front bumper assembly. The rest of the car was gonzo.
On the flip side, I'm saving a '69 that could have very well ended up in the crusher or for parts, so I don't feel so bad.

Scrapped 3. First was a 70 Charger 500 318 car pretty rusty, restorable by todays standards but didn't do a thing for me back then.  2nd was a 68 R/T someone had started a resto on, stripped it bare and left out in the elements/ lost all the pieces. I really didn't want to find and buy all the pieces for it and fix the severely pitted body so I stripped the rest of it and sold the shell to a local who did ??? with it.  3rd was a 68 383 PW car that was totally wasted.

71charger_fan

Two RWD, two FWD. I bought a '73 SE for $55, stripped it, junked it. Then I found a '71 base model for $250, stripped it, junked it. A buddy of mine sold me an '85 Shelby Charger for $50, stripped it, couldn't junk it. No title. I took a sawzall to it and put the pieces in a recycling bin. I bought an '84 2.2 for a couple of hundred, stripped it, junked it.

No, I don't think it was a V21 car. If I remember right there were almost no options on that R/T except for a console.

I scrapped 1 (73 SE tripple Black)
Well it kind of scrapped itself when it started to fall apart on the driveway while I was taking parts off it to save.
The body was gone, the frame rails had rotted to nothing, the motor full of water, and the interior eaten by mice.
So I guess I only "Helped" scrap the car.

Parted one out last week.  I am parting a 73 Charger, Triple white, factory sunroof, power windows...cool car.   Sorry... it had to go!

I will be parting more out soon.  :nana:

Well, of the chargers i have owned, two went to the big scrap pile in the sky. The first was a 70 383 vinyl top car. The car was titled and driven for many years in Illinios. Then it sat many years in a junkyard. I purchased it about two years ago and brought it home for parts and to piss off my wife. Well, needless to say this was a bucket of rust. Some time in its life the vinyl top ripped and water and salt got inbetween the steel top and the vinyl. As i pulled the vinyl top off the car and exposed the roof, it was sickening. :eek2: You could honestly push your finger through the roof. :'(

The second was a 69 383 4 speed car. This one i stored out at my fathers property. This one i did not personally send to the crusher. I bought it again for parts. Wisconsin car. Actually pretty solid. I stripped many parts off of it. Well, at the time I was driving semi over the road gone quite a lot. I came home one weekend, started working on one of my Chargers and need some part off of this 69 parts car. Drove out to my parents place and my car was gone!!!! :flame: My father deemed it totally stripped and useless. Said it was taking up space. Yeah, he has got 80 acres, with three acres of cars, mine was in the way. Well instead of asking me to remove it he took it to the crusher. GOT 20 FLIPPING DOLLARS FOR IT!!!! :icon_smile_dissapprove:  :flame: That pissed me off, no hard feelings though, right :scratchchin:

And I am debating on a third. It is a 1966 or 67 Charger shell. all that is left is the back seat and the rear frame rail and some sheet metal. Waiting for some first gen owner to come and get it someday. Dont know who yet, but someone will.

Here's a 69 R/T that I didn't part, but I did finish it off. After I took this pic we cut the car in half for the front rails/inner fenders. The back half still sits there to this day.

Can I use that pic for my site? Also, can we see a pic of the backend and where it sits today? :popcrn:

I'd have to go out and take a rear shot sometime as I don't have one with me. There really isn't much left of the rear though...  I'm probably going to make a site someday with all of the pics (couple hundred) that these owners have given me permission to take.

will do that in the morning, i feel bad for her, with several thousands of dollars in rear frame work and sheet metal as well as front fenders and a hood, it might have been savable, but it would have cost a fortune to save, not worth it for just a 318/904, low optioned 74 charger SE

I bet this is a thread that doesn't make any sense to the Luedtke (sp) boys, they have never scrapped a Charger in there lives.

Every Charger is a "great father and son project" and you know that must be true because they "supplied 7 Charger for the Dukes of Hazzard movie"

Here's my next candidate:  a 1972 Dodge Charger.

Charger1973

2 73's.  1 was smashed in the front and the other was rusted beyond repair.

That car donated a very important piece to my project, so it will not be forgotten.   :patriot:
