When did you realize the world was not so rosy?

Me and the Mrs. were talking about it and I came up with a couple of events that sort of blow apart any childish innocent view you have of the world.

1.  the first time you ever fall for "let's play 52 card pickup, you go first"
2.  the first time a buddy sidles up to you and asks you what the capitol of thialand is. (punches you in the nuts and yells "bangcock")
3.  the first time someone tells you that if your hand is bigger than your face, you have some disease and you better check now....(smacks your hand right into your face and yells something witty like "you dildo" or 'asshole" )

Realized it wasn't so rosy when in the 3rd grade my dad told me and my sister the he was quitting his job, selling the 5 Daytona's, 2 Superbirds, and 2 Charger 500's, the house, and we were moving to Bangkok Thailand. That was in 1986.

When I realized it really is rosy? Getting to Thailand, and seeing all the good that came from my father making that decision, and the amount of lives that it had a positive effect on. Now 20 years later to look back at the thousands that have benefited by his sacrifices.

the one that always sticks out the most for me is when my dads body shop burned down in 1983. Icame upon it while doing my newspaper route.....that was the fastest trip accross town on a bike I ever made.

My brother took full advantage of our age difference when we were younger. He's 8 years older but now I'm three inches taller and a lot bigger so I can stuff him in the nearest garbage can if he acts up. :yesnod:

I did that to my self once only when my uncle was tuning up his '53 Ford pickup. I was about 9 or 10, and he was using the fender brace as the ground for the timing gun, and he tells me "whatever you do, DON'T TOUCH THE BRACE!". So of course the first thing I did was say "What, you mean this brace(as I proceeded to touch it)" Needless to say, there is a few seconds that went by that I still don't remember :P

Well, other then my uncle laughing at me with tears in his eyes :icon_smile_blackeye:

Third grade, circa 1966. A black kid joined our class ( we're 98% white up here), I had never met a black person before, thought he just had a really good tan. We played catch during recess, the following day several upper class students beat the living shit out of me for associating with him.

Seriously?.. reading the other thread, when JFK was shot in Dallas, I didn't really understand what death was, and i remember my parents trying to explain it to me.
More recently, i can think of a few incidents.

Old Moparz

Not sure of the exact time frame, but going to grammar school in the New York City public school system was probably my first realization.

Probably like Brock, even though I was only 5 at the time; when JFK was shot was probably my first realization, even if I didn't understand the ramifications of it all then. As I got a little older and more astute, growing up with Vietnam always in the media, followed by Bobby Kennedy's and MLK's assassinations in '68, gave me a pretty good clue that the world wasn't as quiet and quaint as my surroundings in Richfield Springs, NY were.

I was 8 years old I come home with my mom and sister to find 7 police cars an ambulance and a fire engine at my house, I could see the people in the window doing CRP  on my dad. I didn't know what it was then but I did know everyone was very freaked out he survived for another 16 years, but it was at that point I learned that my Dad was just a normal man like all the rest and not a super human cop like I made him out to be. So that would have been 1978. Its that one incident that stuck in my head my whole life and why I decided to become a Fireman.

In my early years, it would have to be when my Dad left us. He just packed his things and left. Never said a word. I've never laid eyes on him again. :'(

In later years, Things like the Challenger & 9-11 make us all take a moment to look around us and be thankful for what we have in family, friends and loved ones.

When I woke up 1 morning last March, went down in the basement to get some pellets for the stove and noticed some water. I looked across to the other side of the cellar and this is what I saw. $24k and no insurance coverage later and 2 new basement walls and a slight alcohol problem later I am good to go.

I was 8 and attending the University of Georgia. I  realized that the 19 year old blond girl  in the tight sweater and mini skirt,  only loved me for my mind.
Funny, I still get the same reaction from the 19 year old blond girls of today.

I spent my first 10 years in a city neighborhood.  Rough schools, poor kids from broken homes, etc.  I got beaten up for money & stuff sometimes just like the other white kids did, but there was never anything too personal or vicious about it.

Then I moved out to the whiter/wealtheir suburbs when I was 10.  Suddenly everyone around me had money, the kids got anything they wanted all the time just by asking for it, they all had two parents and went to church, etc.

Turns out it was the WEALTHY kids who were worse.  They were the ones who did thousands of dollars worth of theft & property damage to our house, ganged up & beat younger kids for no reason at all, and generally had no conscience.  And their parents didn't bother to do anything about it when you showed them proof of it, either.  The rich kids were WAY, WAY worse than the city kids had ever been to me.

Oops.
Is your garage on the other side of that wall?

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Yes it is thank God. It wasnt like it gave any warning either like you think. A week before it happened the wall and basement were bone dry as always and wasnt even bowed in. It gave out starting from the bottom up. Halfway through the contractor that was doing the job took my money and went on a coke binge and never returtned. That was my fault for paying him before completion. I went round and round with the insurance company with no luck.
