Thinking of selling my beloved 71 Cuda

It started life as a Gold 383/auto  Now it's Hemi-Orange with a 440/auto, Billboards, AC (not hooked up) two scoop hood. PW,PB, Floor shifter, Bucket seats and a black vinyle roof.   Is it worth trying to sell a car right now with the economy so crappy?.  I lost my job and have zero income.  I am going to be forced to sell.  I just don't want to get robbed.
I only have a few pictures and they are not on a digital camera as of right now. So please don't get mad.  I am just contemplating this drastic decision.
What do you guys think.
* I guess I will still have my Charger!  I don't know. I guess I will wait and see.  The Old Lady is putting her foot down and it's getting heavy.

AFORMERCUDANUT would be a lousy username.

Seriously, how long have you been out of work? I'd hate for you to sell it and then get a good job a week later.

Fitz73Chrgr

Doesn't sound like you have much of a choice unless you can find a new job, which I hope you can do.  It would be a shame to have to sell.

You could always sell your daily driver and drive the Cuda for a while.

As a guy who put my Charger on the market three separate times in the past, I can understand where you're coming from. I hope you don't have to resort to selling your car. I'd try & sell other stuff I cared for less & save the 'Cuda for an absolute last resort...like to save the house from forclosure, or something similar. I'd deliver pizza's for tips before I'd sell a well loved car out of necessity.

Good luck on your decision, I hope things work in your favor real soon.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully everything turns for the better and you get to keep it?

Dude...with all due respect....the economy has BOOMED the past 8 years. Sure, some areas (like Detroit) and industries (like automotive) have suffered somewhat, but the US has increased the jobs available as well as grown at better then 2-4 % for the past 48 quarters.....Historic growth. I would check your sources 'cause those are the FACTS....

ACUCANUT,
As far as selling your 'Cuda...DON'T unless you absolutely need the $$$$$ for your family....This time of year there are lots of ways to earn cash while you are looking for something more perminiate. Just don't fall victim to doubt and self pity. Keep a positive attitude and network. Things will turn around if you stay POSITIVE!

Historic growth....at Wal-mart and Mc Dee's. It's all how you crunch the numbers. This is why the price of collector cars is going down.

Ooh that really bites.  If you need the money I think you'd have little choice whether you could sell it now or not.  And at the same time, at what your Cuda is worth I think you're starting to get into the territory where the guys willing to pay those prices really don't care where the economy is.   :Twocents:

BTW I LOVE the 50!  That thing is so much fun to shoot!  I took it prairie dog hunting with my buddies (just shot at a dirt bank around 600 yards).  One of the guys dad shot it.  He said he could die happy now.  ;D  Do you happen to know the zero distance on it?
When I was just a very young lad I looked up and told my dad, a bareback rider's what I wanna be.  I want the whole world to know about me.  In the rodeo arena I'll make my stand.  I wanna be a rodeo man.  I'll come flyin' from the chute with my spurs up high, chaps and boots reachin' for the sky.  Spurin' wild with my head throwed back, you'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.  You'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.

ACUDANUT

The best way to zero the 50 cal is pull the bolt and look through the barrel and try to line up the scope with what you are actually seeing through the barrel.  How many rounds have you sent down range ??  I wish I lived in the mountains and could try to land a kill at over a mile with it.  If you go through google and type in "50 cal sniper kills in Afgan" it will show some awesome footage.

Ghoste

What do YOU want to do with it?  Do you think you need to sell it to make neds meet or is this more a case of keeping your spouse happy?  If you think you could swing it, there are a couple of options to get her off your back.  You could advertise it at a ridiculously high price and tell her that no one wants to buy it.  Or get it appraised for a ridiculously low price and tell her it would be pointless to sell such a worthless car.  If you have a close friend or relative that you really really really truly take a bullet for trust, you could sell it to them for a hundred bucks with the provision that you get it back for 100 when you are working again.

Chatt69chgr

If there is any way possible to keep the car I would keep it.  I have owned several nice cars and regreted selling all of them eventually.  That car is a lot cheaper than a psychiatrist.  I'd drive a Fiat for a daily driver before I would sell the Cuda.  If you do have to sell it, try to sell to a Mopar guy.  Not some rich scumbag that has no appreciation for what the car is and will abuse it.

ACUDANUT

You guys are so correct.  Besides, everyone wants a Factory, stone stock Hemi-cuda.

Charger_Fan

Do you have car payments on your daily drivers? If so, sell one (or both) of them, pay off the loans & hopefully you have enough left over to buy a cheap DD to get you by until you're on firm ground again. Also, judging from the .50 cal talk above, you could probably sell a gun or five to get by for a while, too. :)
One other thought is if you have someone you can really trust that would lend you money for a while & hold your car for collateral, that might be a direction to think of.

Oh & BTW, UPS (& the other shippers) is hiring any warm bodies for the next month to help with their busy spell.

I had a 72 Charger SE... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 70 Opel GT... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 39 Ford deluxe sedan... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 40 Plymouth Street Rod... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 40 Ford project car... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 48 Ford F-1... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 60 Pontiac Star Chief... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 68 Firebird... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 77 Trans Am... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 79 Trans Am... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 68 Polara... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 71 'Cuda... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 72 Challenger... sold it when money got tight.

I had another 72 Challenger... sold it when money got tight.

I had a 56 F-100... sold it when money got tight.

I've still got several cars, money will come and go, I might trade off or sell one of my toys to buy another that I can't seem to live without, but I'll be pushing carts in the local Wal-Mart parking lot before I sell any more of my cars..."when money gets tight."

Can you eat the 'Cuda ?
Can your whole family sleep + shower in it ?

It is a Cuda, there are thousands of other "similar" cudas, you could find another in the future.  But, they would not be "your" cuda. So absolutley it would stink to sell it.
I'd sit down with the wife, and realistically plan out how you will afford to live for the next few months or whenever a reasonable time period is until you get another decent paying job.
Maybe she could get a job, or a second job ?
Selling the car won't solve the problem of not enough income compared to expenditures, but it'll provide some short term relief.

A buyer "stealing " the car is relative .  If it means you have to sell a car for $20K and you have seen similar cars sell for $40K, well maybe the buyer got a good deal.
If you paid $5K for the car 10 years ago for example and put $5K into it, and enjoyed it for 10 years, and are doubling your money selling at $20K , then it's still a good deal for you , even if you are not quadrupling you money.

If you have the title free and clear,You may be able to get a loan and use the 'cuda as collateral, to get a lower interest rate, well lower than a signature loan anyhow.  Your bank may be different but my credit union gave me a loan several years ago, using my former charger as collateral.  I got the money I wanted, made payments on the loan, got to keep the car. Other than the interest expense, it was a win-win situation.   :Twocents:

ACUDANUT

You guys are all correct.  I have have had my Cuda for 15 years and have a ton of money invested in it.  I also could never afford to replace it down the road.  Thanks, Mike

hotrod98

A couple of years ago, I got kind of hard up for money and let my unrestored "real" hemi orange 71 Cuda (my red 71 is really a gran coupe) go for 6 grand. I instantly regretted it and assumed that I would never be able to buy another real 71 again. Fortunately for me (unfortunately for my buddy), he got hard up for money this summer and offered to sell the car back to me for the same money. I drove the 150 miles the next morning with my trailer and picked it up. It's safe and sound in my garage. No more seller's remorse.
The odds of that happening in most cases is very slim.
My best advice is that if there's any way possible, don't sell.
