Hey there,

Have a question about the reverse lights on my'69 charger which has the 727.  Okay the lights work BOTH in reverse and in drive....what is going on with that?  I guess I'm wondering whats causing that to happen. I have no console, the shift lever is on the column. The neutral switch is 3 prong. and I replaced it with a different one and the car will not even start so.....I reinstalled the one that will start the car,but the lights continue to work both in reverse and drive positions.

Any ides are welcomed :popcrn:

you need 3 prongs one. 68 was the last year to shifter reverse switch

There is a plastic shoe inside the trans that is necessary for the operation of the BU lights with a 3-prong switch. If the plastic shoe is broken or the wrong lever is installed, the BU lights will come on in gears other than Reverse.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Nacho,
I do have the "three prong" one install :icon_smile_approve:ed.

John!  You may have something there? Kinda sounds that the tranny has to come apart? If so what needs to be done?
Thanks I think :'( I really don't like the thought of that though? :rotz:

Nacho-RT74

don't really need to take appart, can be done just removing the oil pan.

HOWEVER just for check, you can simply remove the switch itself and probably you will made to see insithe the plastic shoe conditions

Beside that, are you sure your tranny harness is really in good conditions ? outer black wires could it be also broken somehere and then making continuity to keep lighted on the reverse lights

I'm getting some doubts about the broken shoe stuff, because if was that, mostly sure the groud spot on switch would make contact on any speed and car would start not only at P and N

Hey there nacho,
Well I do have New wiring (harness) for the NSS  so  I'm  not thinking that?
As for th broken shoe dilemma I hope it isn't? as the so called guy who I had over hauled should know better I assume? ::) I know that the NSS he installed didn't work. (beings it wouldn't start the car! :o   I had another "switch" to which I ended up installing. and thats when I noticed it lights up both in drive and reverse.  GO FIGURE :brickwall:  I have yet to try FIRST to see if the car will start in ANY GEAR!

SO "maybe" theres something wrong with the plastic shoe dealy bobber thinga ma jingy......  I will have to do more investigating :icon_smile_angry:

My car does the same thing.  Lights come on in Reverse and all other Drive gears.  My car is also the same set up as yours, column shift, 727.  If you figure it out please let me know.

I tried adjusting the linkage on the trans last week but that made absolutely no difference.

And from my understanding, if that plastic piece is broken there is no "new" replacement part.  You have to find a used one somewhere.  UGH. :icon_smile_blackeye:

Hey Alex, That doesn't sound good about the plastic shoe. :'( :'(

I haven't did any investigating? Been to cold and not really in the mood  :icon_smile_dissapprove:  thats the least of my worries right now.  :-\ I'll wait until it gets warmer or somethin.
So I have to get a "ANOTHER" used one some where?  Thats going to suck! :o

I'll try to let you know if when I get'er figured out :rotz:  Hope you will do the same
