I just rebult a 318 in my 71 Duster. I converted it from a ssix. When I start the engine it is quiet but once it warms up it has a faint tick sound. To me it sounds like a lifter. I asked a local mopar racer about this and he said the problem really lies in with the head gaskets I used. He said when he uses the standard fel pro head gasket he cuts the heads down 20 thousand to compensate for the thicker head gasket then factory.
He said it sounds like one of the rockers is barely off. He said I could try moving the rockers around to different valves may solve the problem.
Have you guys had any problem like this? I don't understand why fel pro would make a head gasket thicker than what is required.

If it's just one lifter making noise the head gasket is not the problem. You probably have a lifter that is bleeding down that won't pump back up. Are you using a thick oil ?

10- 40 oil. I used comp cams lifters. I hope it's not the lifters. It does sould like it's only one that has a slight tick.

or an exhaust leak can sometime fool a guy into yhinking its a tick, and alot of the time they also get worse when warmed up. :Twocents:

The 10-40 oil should be fine. Is this a new installation ?

If so ; did you properly break the cam in ?

Are you using any additives in the oil ?

Try and give a more detailed rundown of exactly what has been done timelines.

That is also a possibility as well....exhaust leaks will often make a ticking noise that sounds like a lifter. Headers or exhaust manifolds on this motor ?
