The owner said it came out of a 68 Roadrunner and is complete except for carb.  Said the motor was running when it was removed.  I am having the shop that will rebuild it for me go take a look.  What do you think of the price he is asking?

694spdRT

There weren't any 440's from the factory in a '68 Roadrunner so make sure it is not a 383.
1968 Charger 383 auto
1969 Charger R/T 440 4 speed
1970 Charger 500 440 auto
1972 Challenger 318
1976 W200 Club Cab 4x4 400 auto
1978 Ramcharger 360 auto
2001 Durango SLT 4.7L (daily driver)
2005 Ram 2500 4x4 Big Horn Cummins Diesel 6 speed
2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7 Hemi

Troy

I say he's full of it. ;) You couldn't get a 440 RR in 68 so if he just pulled it out of one then it's been swapped before. As for the price, it's high for a motor needing a rebuild.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Yea, I'm calling BS on it. :icon_bs:...either that or he dosent know what he's talking about or he's been misinformed :Twocents:

He is sending me a picture of the stamp on the engine block.  He may have said 1969 so that may be my mistake.  He is sending me pictures with the engine stamp.

For those that said it is too much for a engine requiring a rebuild, where are you finding others cheaper?  I thought $1500 for both was not way out of line.  I have been looking for over a year now in Texas and adjacent states with no luck.  If you have leads on one, please let me know.  I am running out of time and my car will be out of the paint shop in a couple months.  Unless I plan to push it home, I need to have an engine to put in it.

dude i have 9 or 10 440's that "ran when they were pulled"  but need rebuilding now. i'll be glad to give you a 440 BLOCK for $500, or a complete motor needing rebuild for $800.. for a 727 core add another $150. i KNOW that is cheaper than 1500

It depends on what you have: If you are looking for an HP complete motor (+727),  and date coded, $1500 is not unreasonable depending on completeness and if it has already been bored.  If it's bored .60 over, and actually a late model motor, that would be a bad deal. I have a 100% complete long block, ran when pulled, never been opened, 68 HP 440 from an RT Charger and have been offerred waaaaay more than $1500 for it ( NOT FOR SALE! ). Know what youre buying - don't freak yet.

I think the only 440 you could get in RR for '69 was the six barrel model.  383-4, 440-6 or Hemi for '69

I can tell you haven't bought it yet because everyone is saying the price is too high. If you had already bought it we'd be congratulating you and saying the price is fair. :smilielol:

FWIW, I think it's too high too. I passed on a 440/727 a couple years ago for $1k because I thought it was too high then. Still do.

I don't think that the 440 4 bbl was offered in a RR until 1971, that is unless you include the Superbirds in 1970.

Around here $500.00 is about the going price for a rebuildable 440. With any 440 I'd pull the heads and make sure its a virgin block. Mic the cylinder walls or check to see if there is a number like .030 stamped on the top of the pistons, if there is, its been bored out and rebuilt at least ounce. I'm not saying it wouldn't take being bored .060 over, but it st-rest me out quite abit waiting to find out if .060 over was going to work on mine.

And about $150.00 for a 727 core is closer to what I'd pay.
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

find a low performance motor and save the bucks.  everything that makes an HP motor an HP motor gets tossed or refurbished during a rebuild. Heads for any given year are all the same, and you will be changing cam/pistons/exhaust manifolds anyway.

I entirely agree. Spend the extra money where it counts. On the NEW combo.

Could be a GTX that someone thought was a RR....how many people call Chargers a Challenger? Anyway....

1500 bucks is WAY tooooooo much for the motor and trans. You can find better CHEAPER! :Twocents:
