Been having some problems with the old John Deere 950 diesel tractor. I bought the tractor with about 8000hours on it. Engine was rebuilt and I have put about 450 hours on it. Started to have a problem and suspected/hoped a failed head gasket was the problem. Pulled the head off today and its got a crack. 1100$ for a new head!

Well I think after looking and reading and talking to many different people the head finally just gave up the ghost. It only lasted 25 years and around 8600 hours of use. I just happen to be the owner to get stuck with the problem. Searching for a new head now.

to bad you couldnt find a GOOD welder. the right person could fix it cast iron can be welded if you get it hot with a torch, and stick weld it with a nickel rod.

I hear this guy's parting out his tractor. Not a John Deere, but maybe the head will interchange...your head's u-shaped, right?

After some looking and watching and pricing reman heads and new heads I scored a brand new head off ebay. Saved me about 400$ from buying new at a JD dealership and only cost me about 50$-75$ more then a reman head. The reman head had new guides put in and checked for cracks and being straight. I would have to put my old valves and springs in the reman head. The new head came with new valves and springs. I really didnt want to put a reman head on it for fear of it doing the same thing it did this time if the reman head was warped and then planed straight. After talking to some diesel guys they said when the head warped it twisted and created a stress spot. It happened in the middle where the crack showed up. Even though the head was planed flat again it was still warped. A matter if time before that stressed spot gave out. Just happened to be my luck. I knew the head had been warped and then plained true again.

2007 must have been a bad year for tractor heads....i had to do some major work to my '46 Farmall M head early in the summer

Man this problem went from bad to worse.  I bought or thought I bought a 950 head.  Got the new head and the dam thing an'nt a 950 head.  On 950's early on they had a 8 bolt head  and then went to a 10 bolt head. You can use a 10 bolt head on an 8 bolt block. I looked this head over on ebay and assumed it was an original 8 bolt as it had some slightly different areas on the casting. I have a 10 bolt head now on an 8 bolt block. Was told it was a 950 head.

At a glance they appear to be the same.





Side by side they arent  1 1/4 inch shorter

The head wont fit. Contacted the seller and right now it appears he will refund my $ and send a order out and pickup shipping the item back to him.  He was told it fits an 850,950,1050 tractor.  After researching my part# stuff  there are 4 heads for these tractors. An 850 head, 2 different 950 heads and a 1050 head.  The 950 has 2 heads. An early model  8 bolt head and a later 10 bolt head. The 10 bolt head will bolt down and work on an 8 bolt block. I have a 10bolt head on my old 8 bolt block now. The original 8 holes are in the same place with the 2 additional holes not being important if they arent used. So bottom line I dont have a running tractor yet. Got 8-10 inchs of snow outside and a Charger outside and a tractor inside all apart. Only good thing is my garage heater is working and I got room in the garage for sitting and drinking beer and smoking cigars which is what I am gonna do later today!

If I was offered a million dollars, I couldn't remember what you typed about 850, 950, 8 holes 10 holes no matter how long I studied it.  Great news is the guy is backing you, beats hearing " Sorry, can't help you".
