If it were me I would rather be safe then sorry specially after the time and effort spent on prepping for paint. They don't look to be bad rust spots but it does not cost that much to treat those areas and have more assurance that they will not come back as bubbles in the paint.

Thanks what would you recommend as a treatment at this point?

Heres what I do with these. I pull out my little hand held portable mini speedblaster. Then just spot blast these small bad spots. Now they are gone. Back to clean metal. Easy to handle this small blaster & easy to concentrate on just those small spots. If you dont have one you can buy one for around $50. Have fun. LEON.

Thanks Leon I just bought A 40lb blaster and looking for sand to put in it. But it's raining here :brickwall: and I'm keeping the parts in the garage with heat lamps and space heater until it stops.

hemi-hampton

The blaster I'm talking about holds maybe 1 pound. Nothing big. No need to go outside but do it in the garage. LEON.

.....or you could fine tune the rest of the spots with a wire wheel on a drill. just whatever you do make sure you get all the rust cleaned out!! :Twocents:

after all the rust is gone you want to use self etching primer and go with primer surfacer over it or you can just use good epoxy primer ie PPG's DPLF series primer

That's what I will be using DP50LF and add reducer to seal.

Ok I'm having bad luck here it has been raining sense Friday after I picked up some of my parts. 100% humidity on the gulf coast not a good time to paint right? And no sooner then I sand a part to 180 grit profile, The one I stared with has rust all over it. :RantExplode: I have heat lamps and heaters in my garage but it doesn't seem to help.  :'(

terrible one

I feel your pain man. Sometimes there's just no stopping it! Even waiting overnight to spray has left me with surface rust the next morning.

in a high humidity area like you are in the parts should be primed almost immidiately after blasting. I hate to say it but you may need to reblast the parts!  :Twocents:

Well I think I learned my lesson, The place that will be blasting the rest of my car will also primer it. But they don't sand it to 180 profile will that matter? and they don't use any metal conditioners they just blast it, blow it off, And paint with what ever paint I want to use.

Silver R/T

if you could metal condition it yourself that would be better

This is just my opinion & I'm sure other will disagree but here's what I like to do, If sandblasted I like to then sand the blasted metal with 80 grit, wax & grease remove, Use Self Ecthing Wash Prime, Then ppg epoxy prime over that. Call it done. But if in a rush & no time, just blow out, wax & grease remove, epoxy prime, super rush, blow out, epoxy prime. I dont think you need metal conditioners on bare metal unless it was not sandblasted but Stripped with chemical strippers. Long complicated story. Maybe I'll post Pics. LEON/

Thanks to everyone for helping me.  I guess I don't need to tell you that I'm in over my head here, but having your help has made me feel like I can do this. Let me tell you what a differance a couple of hours make. The sun is shinning I found sand for my new 40lb blaster, and it's taking a little time but it's removing all those bad spots and the surface rust. once again thanks to everyone. :2thumbs:

hang in ther it will all be worth it ! :2thumbs:  and remember most of us really do want to help so feel free to ask!

Heres some Pics of A car I'm working on now.. 67 Coronet R/T Convertible. LEON.

hemi-hampton

Here it is in self etching wash primer. LEON.

hemi-hampton

Here it is in ppg's DPLE74 red oxide epoxy primer. I noticed most people will either Wash Prime or Epoxy Prime but not both, I like to do both. BUT, You can only epoxy prime over certain wash primers not all of them so you need to know whats what & read direction/data sheets, Also something I noticed most people I have worked with do not do, They say I dont kneed no stinking directions. Then paint flakes off & I laugh. Idiots. This is no Rotisserrie job, undercarriage will be undercoated being a street driven car. LEON.

700jfm

Thanks LEON, That's what the blasting man told me, So I'm just going to let him Paint it with DP50LF epoxy primer. All that's left of the car at the blasters is just the shell no a lot like your pics. not a rag top but will be vinyl.
