If you could do it all over again...

If you could go back, would you have still bought your Charger in the condition it was in, waited for another in better condition, purchased a running car(about 50-70% done mechanically and body), or purchased a completely restored car?

The reason I'm asking is that I know of a few people that are building the car they want, but its taking anywhere from 2 to 10 years plus.

I'd have been a little less fussy and conversely willing to spend a lot more money.

I am very happy with the Chargers I bought.  The only thing I would do differently is to have bought the '70 slant 6 three on the tree car I walked away from when I first started looking.  I wanted a V-8 car.  It wasn't until about 5 years later that I learned about my mistake!

My 68 was in excellent shape when I bought it ten years ago.  No regrets even though at the time I thought I was paying a lot for it - but in retrospect, it was a real bargain at todays prices.  So, would I do the deal all over again?  You bet!

Now that my car is finished I am very happy that I bought it when I did in 1991 and went through the restoration process.  Back then I paid less for a 4 speed Charger R/T than you can buy a rusty 318 project car for now so I think it was a good decision.

Now, if you would have asked me 5 years ago when all I had was a bare shell and a pile of parts my answer may have been different.   ;)

I don't think the mistake is necessarily in starting with any certain condition of car, but rather the wide spreads between the starting point and the desired final product.  It's totallly thankless to move a car several notches up the condition ladder.

There's nothing wrong with buying a raggedy car IF you're willing to leave it raggedy and never try to do a perfect near-stock resto on it.  If you're ever gonna want beautiful car out of it eventually, then it's much better to just buy something pretty close to that condition to begin with.
