New Dodge vehicles paint jobs???

Has anyone besides me notice the paint on some Dodge's? I was at the dealership earlier this spring and seen a new truck under the lights ant it looks like it had orange peel. I guess that must be the norm??? I was there again last night and they had a new Avenger R/T on in the showroom and it looked the same. I asked a salesman and he said he can't see anything wrong with it. When I showed them a bug or some chunk of debris that was painted in on the roof I got their attention. It was real noticible. The ole lady was doing the shopping and bought a minivan. We were at Briggs Kia and she got a Chevy Uplander from them. We got a killer deal since she bought her Buick from them a few years ago so they took off 2K. She already had it picked out when I got home and had her mind set on it already or I would have looked at the Caravans. We then had to go to Briggs Dodge to do paper work for some reason since it was later in the eve that's when I noticed the Avenger. I would think they would have better paint on them than that  :shruggy:

I've noticed this several times upon my visits to check out the newer DCX models and mentioned it here on more than one occasion,..
most recently on this thread, another debate about the new LXs..

What i can't understand is why the quality isn't there when in 2001 they opened a brand new paint facility which was supposedly "state of the art?"
the best paint i've seen is on the new Mini Coopers and Volvos, i have also noticed an obvious decline in japanese cars paint in the past couple of years...
Orange peel will keep me from buying a car,..  :-\

A lot of newer car paint jobs are full of orange peel from the factory..

The worst I've ever seen was on an H2 Hummer.  I could see the orange peel from two lanes over without a lot of light reflecting off of it.
What cought my attention was how blurry a reflected image of a sign was while looking at the truck.

My new Charger has a bity. Not bad at all really.
I've washed it with Liquid Clay Bar and that helped some. What' sleft isn't worth worrying about - for now.

all newer vehicles have there own dictinctive texture I work on all of them and for the most part you could show me a 12x12 patch of a panel and id likely be able to tell you what brand its from :Twocents:

My 1999 300 M has a damn good finish in comparison to the newer model even the SRTs...
i used to laugh at how bad the camaros and other GM products paint texture was. I can't help but think folks look at the new cars under the lights and say "No Thanks"..  :shruggy: and walk..

thats part of it ,BUT the biggest part is the govt regulations on how much they can put out there stacks in a given time, so the paint finish suffers. :RantExplode:

A good friend in the body shop business painted my Charger and he said they more or less have to be trained to duplicate poor OEM finishes on repair work.

I don't think thats paint. It should be porcelain.

all cars have orange peel when they're painted. There's no easy way out of it. You can use different guy, thinner, method but you still will have orange peel (might not be as noticeable depending which method you use) Only way is to get rid of it is cut and buff.

Yeah but should you have pay 20-40K and then have to cut and buff :icon_smile_question:  That would suck to have your heart set on getting a new Challenger and it had an orange peel paint job on it.  :brickwall:

and don't forget that alot of the factory paint is now waterbased or a special blend of paint that the average bodyshop doesn't use.

Like Silver sez, all cars have Orange peel. Sorry, fact of life unless you want to sand & rub. Factory is not going to sand & rub. When I worked at Masco-tech (a.k.a. MSX a.k.a Creative Industries) here in Detroit doing Detroit Auto showcars it could take 1 guy upto 2 weeks to sand & rub a car. But then we charged $20,000 I hear. Thats on a brand new bare shell. Factory is mass production. LEON.

The70RT

It just seems the Dodge's have more noticible orange peel. My 2001 Ram has less than the new ones. I just sold a 02 Buick and got a 06 Chevy and the paint looks better to me.

Impossible to keep all the paint jobs consistant. Yeah, some are worse then other's. No big deal I say.  :Twocents: LEON.

I had some bad bubbling in the quarter panel of my magnum when it was delivered.  I made them repaint the whole quarter from behind the door to the rear bumper.

so then why do the new Mini Coopers have such awesome finishes?.. because it's a small car and easy to smooth?..
If you haven't examined a mini coopers paint I sugest you do, it looks like it came out of a custom shop.

                                         BTW: HemiHampton, where can i get a neo-chally for $20K?..  :icon_smile_wink:

I think the roof and rear quarters on my 73 would take more paint than a Mini Cooper has on it. I jest. My Caliber has very good paint for a DD. I didnt really notice any orange peel on the car. But then, I wasnt really looking.  It listed for around $18000. You dont get a lot for that kind of money.

Why do you guys think run of the mill production cars should have fabulous paint jobs anyway? They sit in the weather, sleet, snow, hail, slush, etc. They get banged up in parking lots. Birds sh$t on them. Not to mention they have to push there way down the highway through sand storms let alone all the bugs. The factory knows what kind of life they have in the real world. I would not want to pay extra for a top shelf paint finish just to have it trashed in every day life.

It seems to me that the factory paint holds up much better than a repaint could. My wifes 99 has been in the body shop many times. The few sections that are still factory paint seem to have less chips and fading than the repainted sections do. I dont know why?

It all depends on how good spray machine is running, how well and how paint is reduced, humidity, etc, etc. Too many factors to list them all down. Btw mini coopers are not cheap (BMW puts them out) BMW's have pretty decent paint jobs from factory.

You should have seen the mega hours they put into those Vipers Paint jobs wet sanding & rubbing when I worked at Mascotech. Sometimes they got repainted 20 times trying to get it perfect. After the front clip got that much paint on it they would cut the front clip in half & throw them away in dumpster. :icon_smile_dissapprove: What a waste. The factory paint is always more durable then repaint since it gets baked at 300 degrees I hear? LEON.

I think I'm just going to buy a big overn and powder coat my whole car     :2thumbs:

Ive heard that too, and apparently thats part of the reason the paint has such bad orange peel. We just got a brand new cadillac SRX in the shop for some uhh "custom" work  :D

The orange peel on that is horrid, especially after seeing the wonderful paint jobs some of the guys at the shop have put out.
