Spam in the forums

For those who just don't quite "get it".........

The reason I have a warning posted about NOT responding to spam threads is because the spammers use automated software which tracks responses. Therefore, every response you guys post generates even more spam. It's already taking a ton of my time to filter this garbage (approximately 150-200 per day) so PLEASE report it and refrain from responding.

Oh, and whatever you do, DO NOT click any of the links. Many of these are drive-by virus installers. Also, someone, somewhere is getting paid per click so, again, this just generates more spam.

Thanks,
Troy

How do I recognize a spam thread?

How do I recognize a spam thread?

Anything with porn links, links for Viagra, etc.....

Some look like there are no links but certain letters of a word will be links to other sites.

Generally a post that has nothing to do with Chargers or an auto topic.

Also a new member that has 1 post next to his ID is a good tip off as well....

Just hit the "Notify" tab in the thread & we'll take care of it....

Yeah, usually they are obvious as Chris mentioned - porn, drugs, refinancing, etc. Typically the user name is some random string of characters or a real-looking name with a random string of numbers at the end. Not something everyone needs to do but, one sure fire way to tell is if the user has never actually been online but has a post. These automated programs register, log in, and post in milliseconds so the forum software never gets to start the "time online" clock. It is physically impossible for the normal human to even copy/paste that fast. They'd have to click through three pages to get to the post form which also takes time.

So, there is software that will register a username and password without a person actually doing it?

Thats the reason alot of sites make you type in a random string of messed up looking numbers and letters that appear in a box to verify that you are a real person before it will let you sign up.    You can see what I mean here.

How do I recognize a spam thread?

Well for instance...there was a thread a few days ago involving porn. I saw a few responses to it. I remembered Troy says not to respond so I clicked Report to Mod. and left. :2thumbs:

Well I think the MODS are doing a good job. For all the times I've been on I think I've only seen one or two of those.
