how do I get rid of the damn moose??

OK, we've lived out in the sticks of Eastern Washington now for over 15 years.  We still love it, but are looking at some of the wildlife a little differently than in the earlier years.  We have a small apple and cherry orchard on our property.  Several years back a moose cow stared showing up a few times a year with her calves and would commence to eating some of the twigs off of the trees.  It's gotten to the point now, that they are doing some serious damage to the trees.  Today the wife and I took up strategic positions around the house.  I was armed with a CO2 powered BB pistol and the little woman carried the heavier artillary in the form of a pump pellet rifle.  Although the evil beasts were annoyed by the little projectiles bouncing off their bodies, it took about 100+ shots to get them to exit the area and stop tearing the branches off the trees.  They only retreated for an hour or so and then returned for more feasting until repelled by more volleys of small arms fire.  I know they will return tonight as we sleep.  I don't want to pull out the heavy arms and have no desire to field dress out about 2500 pounds of moose flesh.  Should we continue with the current form of deterance or is there a better way that is still not lethal to keep them from killing the fruit trees?  I know we need to be careful of these mammoths and don't want to get killed by a pissed off mother moose.  Any and all ideas are welcome.   Thanks, Bob

2500 pounds come on! big 7+ to maybe 800, but no such thing as a 2500 pound moose.

You need a .270 and that's it...one shot and you eat well for the whole year.

I'll come get rid of it for you.
call me!!! please

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

First of all, BB Guns are not effective against a 3,000+ lb animal.

You need a .45 caliber or shotgun

Guns N Rotors

Seriously, you need some wolf wizz.   :yesnod:

Scares the bejeebus out of the moose!

Well, when you look at ALL the moose flesh I'm looking at, it probably isn't too far away from being 2500 pounds.  I've got plenty of adequate fire power to do the beasts in, but my freezers are full and I just want to let them know that our fruit trees are off limits.  But, they do seem pretty dumb and seem to fear nothing at all.   Bob

Wolf wizz?  Sounds good.  Probably worth a try, even though they've not been in this area for several decades, I guess there may be something engrained in their brains that alerts them.  BTW, I think I've heard wolves in the distance in the last few years.   Bob

Have you contacted the Forest Service or Fish & Game Dept.  to ask what may a good, non-lethal remedy?  :shruggy: That would be my first task if I were you!  :yesnod: :2thumbs:
Mrs.Skip68 ;)

P.S.
I know that when we had problems with deer eating our gardens, we would put a half bar of the strongest bath soap on the fence posts at random spots. The deer never liked the scent.  Also,........  although I never liked it, Chuck would make his mark on tree's! :smilielol: NO I AM NOT KIDDIN! But it worked! :scratchchin:  :eek2:

Listen, a moose will not think twice about stompling you in the ground they are very big and will kill you. If the tree is tall enough that it cannot reach you if you climbed up in it try this......    Get a big squirt gun like a super soaker  fill it full of house hold ammonia when the bastard comes under you and goes to eat a branch spray the sucker right in the snoot..  trust me it will leave after it gets done slapping around on the ground  like a little bitch    :2thumbs:  Im serious , just dont fall out of the tree.. it WILL kill you.

Or fill a balloon up with ammonia and smear peanut butter on it and hang it about the mooses head height so it has to reach up to lick the balloon then when it breaks,, good night,, that thing will totally loose it when it gets a snoot full of that shit.. :2thumbs:

Very good advice.  I hope that members of P.E.T.A. aren't trolling the web

Moose are dumb, but don't take crap from anyone! They will stomp a mud hole in you or whoever is in they're way. These are behind our house here in Alaska. So, Moose are around almost every weekend during the winter months due to lack of food in the mountains.

Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

Guns N Rotors

Moose fear wolves above all else. Don't climb trees with balloons,
don't shoot them with BB guns. Don't put your life in danger.

Use the wolf wizz.

These pics are from a guy in a tree stand.

if the balloon is hangin out there in a tree and your watching from the window inside a house, how would that put your life in danger  :icon_smile_question:

ok P.E.T.A. look at how this moose was killed it probably took 20 min of pain,, I could take them much faster ( HUNTING)  with LESS pain,,, than what old mother nature will take them.    :yesnod:

Non-lethal? How about setting off some M-80s? It probably wouldn't work forever but it would definitely get them on the run at first. An electric fence might work too. One good pop on that big wet nose and she'll be running like a scalded cat.

:smilielol: A .45? That's a good one. Make sure you're about 15 feet away and aim right between her eyes. Better loose the hollow-points too or they'll just bounce off her head and then she'll come and stomp you into the ground. A scatter gun wouldn't do much either unless you use 00 buck or slugs. Even with 00 buckshot you'd probably have to hit her about five times.

Something like this would bring her down in one or two shots if you hit her right:

I was thinking wolf urine as I read the thread and then seen wolf wizz. You could try this old trick I have used on all my garden plants with results. Get a couple dozen habanaro peppers and boil them in water. After it boils for a few minutes drain off the water and put it in a garden sprayer. Spray the branches with that. Make sure you boil it OUTSIDE....the fumes will kill you  Hopefully you don't have a pond nearby for them to retreat to. Put that shit in a squirt gun!

:yesnod: No-nonsense rifle of choice when I used to do a lot of elk hunting. They've kind of fallen out of favor in the past decade or so I think because people have gotten bored with them and didn't have anything to talk about so they started buying 300 mags and 7mms, etc. But I see no reason to "upgrade" since it does the job so well. When my dad died I inherited his 30-06 pump so now I have two. My dad bought the pump because he was a lefty and couldn't find a left-handed gun. I've yet to shoot that one.

Rule number one on being a postwhore.  Always, have 3 webpages open.  1 of them is photobucket and 2 for dc.com (you need 2 in case you need to search in the middle of a post)
