Your feelings on BUTTERMILK

I'm sitting here at work, chowing down today's lunch.
We have a community fridge here & most people have to put their names on food & drinks so nobody swipes them as their own.

However, I've noticed that I can leave a carton of buttermilk in there with no name on it & for some strange reason, nobody touches it! 


Yep, I like buttermilk. I can drink it with most anything, just as easily as regular milk.

Isn't buttermilk the weirdest thing.  Butter is great, milk is great, buttermilk is, well, buttermilk.  When I used to be a mechanic in a pvc manufacturing plant I would bring my lunch in a little bag with a baggie of Doritos on top of the sandwich.  Someone started stealing the chips -- and that is classless when we were all just wage slaves.

So I bought some Hostess cupcakes and some syrup of Ipecac and injected the cupcakes through the package sides into the creamy filling.  Took those things to work for a week and the thief never took 'em.  So I went back to the chips and he started stealing again.  So I got some Decon rat poison and snipped off the little decon tag and wrote on it that he should stop his stealing ways.  He did and that ended that saga -- wow I hoped he had gone for the ipecac.  Kim

Anyway, it's been many years since I've tried buttermilk.  As I recall, it tasted bitter, which made no sense.  Unless it was expired.

I tried whiskey and it felt like I was drinking gasoline.  So maybe I should try buttermilk again.  I thought that a few weeks ago, then I wondered if buttermilk was supposed to be something we drink or just bake with.

Buttermilk is what’s left over after the butter has been scooped off the top in the butter making process. Usually with a fleck or two of butter floating on the top that failed to get removed, buttermilk is then further processed by culturing it at around 69 degrees F for 12 to 14 hours which gives it it’s distinctive, tangy taste. Slightly thicker than milk, cultured buttermilk has a unique flavor all it’s own that many people like to drink after it’s been well chilled. People with ulcers or other stomach problems have been drinking small quantities of buttermilk for years. It coats the stomach and brings instant relief.

If you've tried non-sweetened yoghurt, the taste is very similar.
I like tart & sour things, buttermilk is tart. That's why I like it so much.

Define irony:  I was reading a post on another board about this same thing.  The guy in that post said that he has been peeing into some guys buttermilk at work and that he told everyone except one person to stay away from it...

Buttermilk is really good in pancake or muffin batter. You can also make your own buttermilk if a recipe calls for it and you don't have any on hand. Add 1 1/3 Tablespoons vinegar to one cup milk and let sit. Voila, buttermilk.
