Sounds like you have the pump arm over the top of the (pump?) cam. (not sure what the right term is.

Try taking it back out and reinstalling with the arm at a downward angle. You should be able to bolt it up tight then.

Chryco Psycho

rotate the engine 180-360 * to back off the cam lobe for the pump

is there a certain piston that should be at TDC when i do this, or should i just play with it like you said until i get it right
          Thanks

It sounds like you might be trying to put it on with he push rod still in the down position. If you lift it up and put a glob of heavy grease on there it will hold the rod up long enough for you to slide the pump arm under it. Then it should sit flush with the block.

the pump screwed so i just ordered a nice electric one from jegs.   thanks for the help

This is so funny.  I spent 2 1/2 hours today trying to put a fuel pump in my Tempest.  If you look inside the fuel pump housing in the block, you will see a rod. Try getting a screwdriver in there and push up on the rod.  If the rod doesn't go up, try spinning on it then push it up.  It is a big big pain.  My hands are still smelling like gas 5 hrs later

Next time use a magnet and lift the rod up. Put a screw driver under the rod then put some grease on the rod, it will stay up long enough to get the pump in. Works better on a cold engine  :2thumbs:
