Bob, it's probably the original oil pump drive.....wouldn't hurt to replace it when you swap out the cam.  :yesnod:

440Source carries the Melling brand oil pump drives (pn 101-1008) for a really good price...about $12.00 cheaper than summit racing.  ;)

The heads showed up yesterday! ;D  They look great, but when checking out how the valvetrain was going to mount I realized that I have no holddown hardware.  The rocker arms are "Crane Gold".  Any suggestions on what I should use?   Thanks, Bob

Bob, the stock shaft hold downs are fine with the crane gold rockers.  ;)

Mike, we're on the road until after the holidays.  I did take some pictures, but they are way too large for he site to accept.  I am not real smart when it comes to resizing pictures for the site to accept.  Yes, SRP is scheduled to go on the auction block.  Hopefully it will be picked up by someone who will keep it as a racing facility.  But, that's a longshot.  Bob

Well, I'm back from the midwest where we spent the holidays wth my daughter and grandkids.  Been plowing and snow blowing the driveway (1/3 mile long) for two days now.  I still need to get the tranny to the shop and when it is reinstalled I'll start working on the engine.  I've got just about all the parts now but have another question or two;  Is the stock crank damper something that I should consider replacing?  Should a higher capacity oil pan be something to think about?  I don't plan on any extended high RPM driving, but a 1/4 mile blast now and then is a definite probability.    Thanks, Bob

Hi Ron !!  It's a '71 (non-HP) forged crank engine and I can only assume that the dampner is the original unit.  The oil pump was replaced a couple of years ago.  The receipt shows a part #601-1029.  I don't know if it's a high volume unit or not.  It has a stock (5 qt.?) pan with a windage tray.  Thanks, Bob

Bob, the balancer should probably be swapped out if it is an original piece....the rubber that bonds the outer ring to the hub will vulcanize over time and the outer ring will start to slip. If it seperates from the hub bad things will happen. Here's what i would replace it with :

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D163383&N=700+4294925232+4294839044+4294871851+400304+4294908078+4294925082+4294840062+115&autoview=sku

The street hemi pan and pickup from Mancini is what i would use to increase the capacity a few quarts. This pan is also baffled to keep oil in the sump....where it belongs. Your windage tray will work fine with this pan. Make sure to order the 3/8in pickup if you order this as a package.  ;)

Thanks for the links Ron!  I'll get that stuff coming.  Todays question----I currently run a 3"K&N air filter in a dropped base housing.  Do the K&N filter tops that replace the chrome covers really offer any advantage?  I don't like the looks of them, but if they really work better that the solid covers, they may become more attractive to me.  Thanks, Bob

Bob, with the Proform main body that doesn't have a choke horn....the solid top is fine.  :yesnod:

The big mistake most guys make is using a drop base (solid top) with a standard carb that has a choke. This ends up placing the top of the horn very close to the lid which chokes off airflow to the primary venturies. In those instances....the flo-thru top is a huge benefit. :yesnod:

In your situation....the solid lid is ok with the drop base air filter and the Proform main body 750 DP'er.  :2thumbs:

hey bob,  making any headway?      srp goes on the aution block april 10th,  they say that its going to be auction in plots but the racing part of the property is going to be sold as one plot in hopes that it remains a track.   i really hope someone steps up to the plate for us.   walla walla is the same distance for me but for some reason spokane just seems like home to me.   my best friend with the black nova that i always raced with was killed a couple years back, so srp has became a speical place to me, i somehow feel closer to him when im there.

Hi Mike!!  I blew out my back a few weeks back.  That, combined with this damn cold weather has pretty much kept me out of the shop.  I'm planning on getting back at it next week though.  Sorry to hear about your friend.  That didn't happen at the track, did it?  Too bad we don't have enough coin to bid on SRP in April.  It will probably just become another housing tract and us local guys will be SOL.  Without the friday night street drags the kiddies will likely just go back to killing themselves and others on the public roads.  Bob

OK guys.  I've done nothing but plow snow here for the last couple of days and another storm is on the way.  So, I'm still not working on the car, but have all the parts staring at me.  My main goal when starting this build was to end up with a 500 +/- HP car that would run mid/low 12's in street trim.  So how about a little bench racing?

Car--1968 Charger

Engine--1971 440, forged crank. .030 over, TRW forged flat top pistons (six pack?)

Heads---Mopar Performance 452 Aluminum W/2.14/1.81 valves (Basically E-brock RPM's without the angled plugs).  Stage one porting and basic prep by Dwayne Porter.  Flow as follows:
         Intake               Exhaust
.100--69.4                     57.0
.200--151.8                   112.0
.300--219.5                   143.5
.400--265.1                   170.7
.500--273.8                   191.1
.600--283.8                   205.5
.700--284.2                   216.1

Cam--Comp. Cams custom grind specd. by Dwayne Porter.  XEHL ?

       Intake                 Exhaust
lift----.526                      .526
dur-- 275                       287
@50-231                       237
LSI--112

Intake--E-brock Performer RPM.
Carb----Holley 750 DP w/Proform main body.  Carter high volume mechanical fuel pump w/ Holley regulator.
Exhaust--Hooker Competition 1 7/8" headers.  2 1/2" H-pipe w/ Dyno-Max, Ultra flow mufflers.
Ignition--Mallory Unilite.
Tranny--727 w/Trans-go shift kit & GearVendor O/D.  Turbo Action 10" Street converter (around 2800 stall).
Rear-end---8 3/4 w/3.55's & 28" tall tires.

So assuming 9.5 to 10.0 compression ratio, do you think this combo will make the power & times I'm after?

Thanks, Bob

Bob, those are some super flowing heads....the low to mid lift numbers are oustanding for a std port window !  :2thumbs:

It should make 475-480 hp/500tq easy.....plenty for low 12's inmo.  :icon_smile_big:

i think the car will run great and make you happy im sure it will have the et you want in it. traction is going to be a real issue if you try to do it on a typical street tire. with all that extra power along with the higher stall converter it is going to destroy the back tires.
