the MAIN diff on smogger engines and earliers, are pistons. You get higher compression ones and will get same power.

another differences are forged crank and camshaft but you can live with cast crank. They still handle LOOT of power.

Heads are all interchangeable between any year BB/RB. Of course closed chamber heads will help a lot aside of metallic head gasket.

If you get closed chamber heads, my advice, get a set of hardened seats and install, for unleaded gas and prevent damage.

awsome! thanks nacho, so the pistons then...what should i replace with?

there is A LOT of sources and options depending on compression you want. in fact stock pre 70 pistons will give you same earlier models 440s power, but for same price you can get more than earlier stocks.

here are couple of examples ( surf the website ):
http://www.campbellenterprises.com/pistons.htm

another great source is www.440source.com. you'll find SEVERAL options there from stock up to strokers. Everything depending you want and budget.

Beside that a good performance cam. Stock laters one are not bad but an earlier stock will give you more... that would be your choice even if you want MORE.

Is relativelly cheap get same or little bit more from lates 440 than earliers 440, since basically is the same engine. Will cost you the same upgrade than simply rebuilt

Of course if you want to get MORE there are lot of options too. You'll notice on links I gave you

An advantage on laters BB/RB is stock manifold is ready to spreadbore carbs. So you can start making internals and mount on car. Then step by step upgrade the externals, but you are already with some "perfomance" stuff from stock parts. Check if your exhaust are already HP or not.

anyway wait for expert opinions.
