I'm finally going to ask. WWYD? 2bbl or 4bbl 383?

Should I rebuild my 383 to original 2bbl specs or go for the 4bbl HP version?

Stay original, go with the 2bbl
To heck with original, bump it up
Do both. Save all the 2bbl stuff and start from scratch

Ok, I'm finally at the point where a decision needs to be made on the direction I'll be going with the engine. I've decided that I can't have it both ways, ie., build an engine that will accept either a 2bbl or 4bbl carb so I need to choose one or the other. The only other thing I could do is put the heads aside and buy new ones, although for the sake of saving $$$ and storage I'd rather have the originals rebuilt and used. I don't want a drag racer but I would like a little oomph if you know what I mean. I was actually pretty happy with the power of my 383/2bbl/auto '70 back in the day so maybe it won't be so bad. One other thing, if I built the engine to original 2bbl specs and then put a 4bbl on it would it still run out ok?

The car is 1 of 74 built in '68 with the 383/2bbl/4spd combo so the choice is perhaps a little tougher than if it were 1 of 10,000.

Bull, if you are still painting it Black, put a 4bbl on it, who cares, my  :Twocents:

I'd keep all the stock stuff for "just in case" and get a set of Edelebrock heads and four barrel it from there.  It isn't going to cost a lot more than upgrading your current heads and then they'll still be there if you need them.
Rare doesn't always equal valuable so you will be more likely to raise the worth of the car to most buyers by having a four barrel if you were to sell it.  Having both keeps it ready for the tiny handful that would pay more for the two barrel four speed combo.  :Twocents:

I agree that rare doesn't necessarily equal desirable and I've always wondered if my car fits that description. IMO some of the oddball small block/slant six combos fit that ideology but I'm not sure on miine.

Dan's probably right though, if I don't care about the color being original why worry about the engine?

I suppose that was kind of my point too, I just wasn't able to get it across as well.

Now go get four barrelling!  :2thumbs:

I've got no real problem with that except I know myself too well. My right foot weighs a lot and I need to keep my job. :D
