OK, well i've never had to deal with an issue like this before, so i'd like some ideas here.

Here's the issue, 69 charger r/t with a 440/727/8 3/4 with 3.23's, all stock motor except for mopar ele ignition, eddy CH4B intake, and eddy 1411 750 carb. when i floor it in, on the down shift it pulls hard to about 3600rpm, and then all of a sudden looses power, and almost stumbles/flutters without making power. Sometimes it does it, and sometimes not. It's really hard to describe it, but it's just like someone pulled a plug out while it was running, kinda missing and not making power. Not at insane high rpms, just on lets say a 40mph kickdown, then all of a sudden it just boggs.

Timing is set to 14* initial, 36 total mech, total mech and vac is 50* (14* vac.). The motor otherwise runs like a watch, plugs are perfect color, no ping, runs like a dream. I can't figure out if this is a ignition issue or a carb issues. It almost feels like the seccondaries just instantly close, and the motor is starving. It almost boggs/surges when this happens. Ideas?  :smilie_help: :smilie_help: :smilie_help:

My first guess is that your car is running out of fuel - maybe the floats are not adjusted right or your fuel pump is not keeping up.

dont overlook the coil or the igntion box.  thats where id start.

the carb is new, and i've checked the floats, they are fine.  The reason i'm not thinking it's a fuel issue is becasue there is no problem in high gear, just on a kickdown as it approaches 3600rpms or so, just boggs, makes no power, if you let off, and hit it again (almost instantly) it is usually fine.  almost feels like the seccondaries just slam shut.   :flame: :brickwall: :scratchchin:

i'll give that a shot, coil is new, ignition box is the chrome one, i have the original orange box that came with the mopar ele ign kit, i'll try that.   :scratchchin:

I was using the same Carb until a few weeks ago. I was having nearly the same problem. It would cruise just fine on the highway and around town but, if I launched the car, it would take off strong then fall on it's face when I went to 2nd gear. Soon as I let up, it ran fine again. Nice smooth idle and no other issues Some of my friends thought it was an issue with the carbs stock metering rods being too small.

I'll never know as I didn't want to mess with it and ordered a Holley 750 Dual feed vac 2ndaries mdl 4150. Got that baby on and the problem was solved. Pretty much proves that it was the carb..

I've had the problem right when you punch it at cruise, let's say 50mph, kick it down and instantly the problem is there if i just catch the 2dn gear downshift at high rpm. So i really doubt it's the fuel pump, plus from WOT from 60mph to 110mph, it was FINE. I really don't seeing it being a fuel related issue, since it's instant. I'm leaning to a carb mechanical issue (like the weighted mech seccondaries closing), or ignition????   :RantExplode: :brickwall:  :eek2: :popcrn:

I have been hearing a lot of complaints about the Eddy carbs as of late....A friend switched to a Holley DP on his Coronet R/T 'vert & wont look back

Hook up your timing light, rev up the engine and at 1500 rpm the timing mark should move. This will verify that your vacuum advance is working. Rev it up to about 2500 rpm the timing mark should move again, this will verify that the mechanical advance is working. Rev it up and down in the 2500 rpm range to open and close the mechanical advance to make sure its working properly. Hope this helps.
Lets us know what you find in the end.

Cheers

Timing is set to 14* initial, 36* total mech all in by 2300rpms, 14* of vac.  I set the timing perfectly, temp vac guage in the car, took highest reading, set with timing light, and a hand held vacuum pump, adjusted the vac canister (thru nipple with 3/32" allen).  I've tried between 10*deg initial and 14*deg initial, with no difference, still does it, but runs alot better at 14* deg initial, 36 total mech.  Dist, carb, are new.   I'm sure timing is perfect, other than this issue the car runs like a dream.   :'( :brickwall: :scratchchin:

Plug the vacuum advance and see how it runs.  ;)

So what your saying is that you can start from a standing position, floor it, run it through all the gears and everything works just fine... You only have this problem when you kick it down from 3rd to 2nd, is that correct?

Also, does it do it all the time, or just when the engine is Cold... just when it's Hot... or Warming up?

Excellent, good to know. :2thumbs:

yes it was driving me crazy.  Last night i took the car for about an 80mi cruise, in the FOG!!!!  The fog was so thick it was awesome.  When i had my shutting off problem (where the car would just shut off when driving), i put on a new chrome ecu (the "good" one), and replaced the balast resistor.  The problem was the balast resistor, but i figured i'd install the chrome box since i had it, and use the orange box as a spare.  As i sorted out the car otherwise mechanically, i never really drove the car hard until lately.  That's when i noticed this issue, and i knew it did'nt feel like a fuel issue.  Actually the car pulls alot harder with the orange box, funny, i thought these things either work or they don't but that's not the case.  The car ran fine with the chrome box except for the high rpm miss, but i could have sworn it was the seccondaries just slamming shut at WOT, but the ign box was an eaiser thing to try first!!!!   :2thumbs:
