I want to get a new higher output alt for my car. I want to get one that I can just bolt on and go. What would be a good choice? I was looking at this one here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Powermaster-75-amp-Mopar-Natural-Alternator-Dodge_W0QQitemZ230180506652QQihZ013QQcategoryZ33573QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Would I be able to bolt that one on and go? I realy know nothing about this kind of stuff, so any help at all would be greatly appreciated :2thumbs:

that's the best you can get IMHO

does your car have mechanical or electronic regulator ? I mean your actually alt is single or double field alt ?

if is already double field alt and electronic regulator, this change will be plug and play

if is single field with mechanical regulator you have two options:
-upgrade the wiring ( just add one wire with terminal and one plug ) and electronic regulator
-ground one of the new alt brushes, replacing one brush isolator washer for a metallic one, or simply wiring it to chassis

the regulator is most likey mechanical. It was a replacement I picked up at NAPA. Heres a few pics if that will help. They are not the best but it was dark outside.

yeah thats the round back alt, single field feed and mechanical reg...

If beside the alt upgrade you don't want to run another device upgrade you can make work the new one grounding one of the brushes.

beside that take a note on these:

Thanks Nacho :2thumbs: Where is a good place to get one of those electronic regulators? And where do I add the new wire for the electronic regulator?

I think any parts car dealer will be able... In fact I have known Mopar dealers still carry them. I never have been in USA to know the best places. Down here are available even on Gas station stores. Not Mopar, but aftermarket and available.

Beside that, I can tell you on the web I have seen on buymopar.com, paddock, year one, jims autoparts and A REAL AND VERY LONG etc...

The new wire... is just add a blue one from your existant blue wire at mechanical regulator to the extra brush on alt. Then attach the new regulator plug pigtail to the splicing blue wire point you are getting and the existant green wire you already have on harness... that's all. Pigtail already has blue and green wires codes.

Check the threads I linked to you... there is lot of info, included diagrams to Run the new wire, AND a wiring upgrade to extra loaded alts... very important!!!!

BTW, the old alt will work to some spare parts like rotor, one of the brushes and its isolator and bearings. I have had bad luck with rotors, that's why I say you that :P

Ok Nacho I have read through all of the old threads and now I'm more confused than I was when I started. :ahum: I have 2 blue wires going in to the Voltage regulator. Which one of these do I splice in to? I made a very crude diagram of what mine looks like. Like I said before I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this kind of thing.

you have this ( grounded brush on this diagram is actually simply a non isolated, without prong one in your assembly, is the same )

and need this:

where you will need simply run a blue wire from the wire what is actually feeding the regulator to the added field on new alt.

then your existant green wire and the splicing point at blue wire you will be making from the actuall regulator blue source will need to be attached to an electronic regulator pigtail like this, matching color wires between pigtail and engine harness:

If you already doing the voltage regulator you could install a late model Alternator in it.

I used a 1988 dodge cargo van alternator.

Not exactly a direct drop in, but not that hard to mod either.

Its good for 117 amps and you can get it any place on the planet.

Manfred318

Welp got me a "new" electronic regulator, pig tail, and ballast resistor today for $5 at the local junk yard. Now all I got to do is gt me a new Alt and ill be in bidness. Thanks again Nacho for all your help

2Gunz What kind of mod is necessary to use a late model alt?

The 88 Dodge cargo Van alt comes with a V belt pulley standard and doenst require a special connector like some of the

other upgrades people have done.

Its been a bit.

But from what I can remember I just needed to cut a spacer a 1/4" and make one longer about 1/2"

Pretty easy really.

And of course you will need to add some heavy guage wire.... but you have to do that anyway.

I have a bunch of pictures on some of the stuff Ive done.... I need to get it all posted.

I installed the Powermaster 75 Amp in my car. Thanks to Nacho :2thumbs:, I was able to work out the bugs. I did the bypass to the ammeter through the firewall using 8 gauge wire and the 12 gauge fusable link and installed a 70s voltage regulater with the prong plug. After this the car was running great.

All you need to know is right here.
