I am on the second electronic type instrument voltage regulator I made using these instructions. http://www.imperialclub.com/Articles/GaugeRepair/    The first one I made had a lead break off the chip, the second one, which is on the car now, just flat died on me. I am on the first leg of the Hot Rod Power Tour. Got to go the rest of the way home with no gauges.

Any one have a tip for me? I need a reliable instrument voltage regulator.

could you possibly pick one up at an auto part store and swap it in?

I also tried that conversion a while back.......never really worked for me either.

I just swapped back in the "old reliable" transistor type & all is well.....except for the occasional overheating of the regulator gauge spike

I just got a NOS one to have a spare, and even the housing is not the same because the ground prong bracket, when I need ( I hope never ) will interchange the backelite board and insert on the original housing.

I did the conversion almost two years ago with no problems.

Two suggestions:

After you attach the wires to the three leads, take some epoxy glue and encase the leads and the bottom of the IC chip to keep the leads from breaking.

Ream out the hole in the regulator and attach it to the cluster housing where the old capacitor mounted.  That way it doesn't vibrate and you have a huge heat sink.
