header fitment (Yes this is a worn out topic)

I am restoring a 74 plymouth Sattellite.  I talked to a guy at Carlisle about what headers he used and how much modification had to be done. He told me use Headmans. I have used these on 2 other cars and was expecting the normal mods. I.E raise engine, bang on a few of the pipes and in they go. Well this was not quite the same. I started with the drivers side.
1st I had to remove the front motor mount
2nd bang the pipes to clear the center link
This didn't work so I unhooked the center ling from the steering box.
3rd Lower engine and it sits right on the center link. Won't fall into mounts

So I am ready to pull my hair out at this point. Thought I would try to get some perspective from someone. Anyone have advice?

I called Summitt, they said they would exchange them. I thought maybe try Hookers. So they are on the way now. However from the picture they look to be the same design!

i have a 73 RR, just put on 1 7/8" hooker super comps, had to ding the front header pipe a little to clear the man steering gearbox, raise the driver's side of the engine w/hoist, and nestle the starter in the header pipes and put all in at the same time.  Went together easy and no fitment issues with centerlink.  hope that helps.

I am guessing I figured it out.
Does the center link go above the header?

Heath, on the small block headers i believe that is the case. Not 100% positive but there is usually one tube that wraps around the steering linkage. Did the headers come with any instructions ?

One suggestion ; identify the engine so that members answering the question know what you're asking. I'm assuming it's the smallblock (318) that you were assembling recently....

:iagree:  that would definitely help... i do big blocks only, so I assume BB each time a question is asked unless stated specifically, sorry for any confusion.

Sometimes the obvious is overlooked.
Sorry and yes its a 318!

Not happy with my hedman headers because of clearance with the steering box and the plugs are a bitch to change...and the starter was in the way, but this is on a 440.  If it's better on a 318 then go for it.

Got a replacement set of hookers. Thought all was good until until I go to tighten them down. 3 of the bolts just cannot go on, they are too tight against the outlet. Put the old Headmans back on  and bacically the same problem.
Headers are so much fun.
