I spent about 2 hours on the phone with the owner of this car on Tuesday night.  Quite an interesting conversation, especially since I had hoped for years to find out more information on this car.  I suggested to the owner of the car that he check out the Aero forum here, so perhaps he will chime in with more details of the car soon.

There is absolute truth to the claim of this car as the "first" Daytona according to the VIN sequence number.  Interestingly enough, this car is the last Daytona on the Dealer Shipping list, which also makes it the "last" Daytona according to that criteria.

Personally, I do not think that this is the car used in the Playboy ad.  That car had "Charger" script emblems on the C-pillar, and this particular Daytona started life out as an RT/SE.  The SE emblems were on the car when its color was changed from F6 to R4, so I doubt it is the same vehicle.  For the same reason, I do not think that it is the White/Red Stripe mock-up car used in the early advertising photos either.  It too had regular (non-SE) Charger emblems on the C-pillar.  This F6 car may still have been used in some fashion for the development of the Daytona, but it might be hard to find out what that involvement would have been without a first-hand account.  Wasn't Dale Reeker at a recent wing club meet?  I seem to remember seeing a picture of him from somewhere, but I can't for the life of me find where that inkling came from.  I think it was in the pictures that Harry Lee Hyde brought to the MMW show, but I do not remember what the caption was.

Anyway, this is quite a historical car.

thanks for the info!

I MAY have a couple 1976 pics of the car coming--we're in the process of getting a lot of our slides onto CD, and one of the places I have pictures is at Les Bowman's house.  Did he own the car in '76?  There are pics of our petty blue car there on his lawn along with his cars, and I think there's a red daytona.

I'll know more tomorrow when the cd comes back.

It was the 1977 meet in Michigan that it took first place, not 1976.

This photo was taken  in the parking lot of the Henry Ford Museum.

The car sure does not appear to have changed at all.

Yes, he would have owned the car then, so that would likely have been this Daytona in your pictures.

Another one.  This is from the Chrysler Proving Grounds, also part of the 1977 meet.

Ghoste

I like that second pic Doug.

I actually like how the grille screen is painted black on that car in '76. Looks interesting.

Welcome to the group.  If you sell the car, are you still going to be hanging around?

hemigeno

Hello, again!  Welcome to DC.com, and thanks for chiming in about your car.  As I've told you before, that car is quite a piece of Daytona history...  Good Luck on the potential sale, although I'm still hoping to make a road trip to see the car sometime before it leaves for a new home.

great pictures pettybird , were the pictures taken at les bowmans place?

pettybird

yes they were, according to dad's note on the slides.  Of course, if someone objects, I'll defer, as I had not yet had my first birthday.   :rotz:

69_500

That is the same thing I do when I'm looking at my dad's old pictures. I just flip them over and read the notes he made on the backs. A lot of times they are still in the paper folders from the developing, and then he made various notes on those packages too.

Some great looking shots though. Wish we could get that many wing cars together at the proving grounds once again.

Les must to have had some good contacts to have got the last daytona. And the mystery superbird or that would be quite a coincedence.I met him on occasion way back and bought parts from him.Nice guy
