oiling hydraulic lifters

Intructions say to squirt oil in the side hole until it comes out the top. I can see the hole taking on oil for the 1st few squirts, but then its just spilling over the sides. At this point I really don't see any sign of oil at the top. I tried squirting in the top and it does indeed push out the side(perhaps an airpocket).

So how does one do this correctly?

I just put them submerged in a pan of oil, then if they are hydrallic flat-tappet you put on the cam lube on the mating surfaces and install them.
