If you install them in the back, how do you stop the front blinkers from blinking fast?  Heavy duty flasher???

Most Led's will require that you put a solid state Blinker in as a replacement.

The Old school blinkers require a load to make them run correctly, and the LED's dont draw enough power.

I put in a set of LED 1157's I found at Wallmart for $6 each.  The effect was very simular, the cost was a lot less and I had no problems with the blinker because my 40 year old wiring has enough resistance in it  :nana:

for 260 bucks, that set of bulbs better come with a sack with 230 bucks in it.

So does anybody have any pics of before and after........are they actually brighter?   Would be very curious to see!
DODGE CHARGER--Fuel for Living!

Rolling_Thunder

they are definately brighter...   only problem on 69 and 70 cars are all you see are three bright blocks in the taillights...   they dont fill the housing with light like a regular lamp...     the 68's are round to fit the housing so you dont have that problem. And FYI - the one I installed I was not impressed with considering the price...    hot glue was used to seal the lamp adapter and the metals plates were flimsy...   for my charger I will be making my own for like $50.00

Let's see. Should I spend $249 or $6 for the same result? :scratchchin:

That depends.  Do you like to buy the 10 dollar toilet paper or the 2 dollar toilet paper?

No, it depends on whether I get the same results. If the $2 TP works as good as the $10 TP I'llbuy the $2 TP. But I don't typically go around asking people about their preference in toilet paper.

No one has before and after pics? :eek2: Are they really bright? :coolgleamA:  Seems like a lot 'o coin for taillights.... :scratchchin:

:iagree: That's kind of what I was shooting for but I'm not having much luck.

dont know about before pics, but here's one of Norway's car.

I read something about the napa/autozone bulbs not really doing much...over the standard bulbs.

I noticed yesterday that alot of the tractor trailers and sand/dirt trucks have round LED taillights. Anyone on here who is electrically inclined think that the guts on one of these could be converted to the 68 taillight? They seem to only cost $25-$50.

Call The Boeing Company in Renton, WA. They're EXPERTS at LED lighting conversions and I believe their trucks also sport LED lighting !

I´ve tryed the bulb style LED´s with 8-12 leds, they are brighter than standard bulbs.
It is BIG difference between over 200 smal leds in one, than 8-10 leds .....So is the price.

I tried the 12 LED bulb tonight and I thought they weren't as bright at all, More straight off light not filling the whole lens. The LED is in the right socket on the left side of the car. Brake Lite [/img]http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r27/TOMMYMAC_photos/ChargerTailLites008.jpg[/img]

Ok, I'm not very handy with a camera, but here goes.
The first picture is the bulb itself.  Available at Advance Auto.

The 2nd picture is of my car in with the parking lights on.  The drivers side are both LED.  The passenger side is standard 1157's.

As you can see, there is not a significant difference in brightness that you can see in the pictures.  However, what the camera cannot show you is take this same setup and turn on your 4-way flashers.  If you watch the standard bulbs closely, you will see that they never really go completely out while flashing.  Just about the time the bulb is going out, it starts to brighten again for the next flash.  However, on the LED side, the flashes are very obvious and eye catching.  That is because LED's are instant on and instant off.  To me, its a safety thing.

Thanks for the pictures, guys. What it looks like to me is that they aren't necessarily brighter but that they seem to be more... defined, sharp, etc., if that makes any sense. I kind of like the pattern the LED light creates in the taillight too. But I would not say they are brighter. :shruggy:

I think they run cooler than a bulb. Not so much heat generated.

tommymac

I didnt try that on all lites, also they will last longer too

Some comparison pictures...
1) A comparison between the 2 LED bulb types
2) The new LED vs. a standard bulb
3) The new LED bracket
4) The mess of ground wires required for the new LED bulbs.  (Got to find a way to tie strap this mess!)

So in your opinion are the large LED lights worth $250?

2Gunz

Why not just build some?

A few of the new rebels should be crazy bright in that application.

Oh and pretty cheap.

Headrope

LEDs offer other advantages, such as needing less juice to work - a good thing if your wiring is 40+ years old and not packing the punch it used to.
A good buddy of mine owns a LED business and his prices are lower than what I've seen so far. He's not much of a Web designer but has been working the West Coast car show/swap meet circuit for many years - and Hot August Nights in Reno.
You might check out flipflopled.com.
Sixty-eights look great and the '69 is fine.
