I want to put a new oil pump in my 400, and I am wondering what you guys would recommend. I was thinking a high volume pump, but what do you guys think? Any brand names you recommend?

I have heard nothing but good about Melling.  I think a new Melling High Pressure pump would work fine on the street:

On a side note, I'm using this Melling High Volume pump on my 440:

I am also using this oil pan from Mancini:

I have read that you should have increased oil capacity when using a High Volume oil pump.  I have also heard that increased capacity may not be required.  I don't think that increasing the capacity will hurt anything, better safe than sorry.  At any rate, any new pump ought to be better than a well worn stock one   :Twocents:  Good luck

If you're using a stock pan then stick with a std volume pump. If the oil pressure is low you can use a high pressure/std volume pump to perk up the oil pressure at low engine speeds. If the oil pressure is adequate then the std volume pump will suffice.

It really depends on the condition of the engine. One other maintenance item to look at is the timing chain. If it's original to the motor and has lots of miles...it will be stretched and need replacing. A double roller chain is good insurance, inmo.

440 Source has a nice tutorial on oil pumps that you might want look at.  I don't know if the same pump fits a 400 but the info they had was somewhat universal.
