which carb for me????

I am going to be getting a 68 charger in a few days and i need to get a new carb for it.  Its a 4 speed with 3.91s.  The rear tires are 295/50/15.  Right now the engine is pretty much stock but it has a different cam in it.  I dont know any specs but it is definently not stock.  My plans for the engine are to get some edelbrock heads in the future.  I will be using the car for driving around and maybe a few times a year at the track.

With it being a stick, you can get by with a DPer, Quickfuel has some NICE carbs, a guy i know is a distributor for QF, he has VG prices on his carbs, his name is Jim, its Riverset Motorsports in Georgia, 706-895-3300, tell him you know me (Joe Gallo), he has helped me out with alot of stuff & he's easy to get ahold of too :2thumbs:

If your planning on a good set of heads & a decent converter, i would say an 850dp "general compatition", maybe even an annular booster 850dp

I have 850 speed demon sitting ready to go on my 440 once I get it all ready. That would be my choice for the mild built 440 and it will be plenty for well built 440

do you guys think a mechanical secondary would be better then vac. secondaries?  Im also not exactly sure what kind of manifold is on it.  I attached a picture if anyone is talented enough to recognize the manifold.

Better stick with a 750dp with the 383, its hard to tell what manifold that is, maybe a torker :shruggy:, isn't there any writing on it?

I was doing a little research tonight, and what do you think about a 750 speed demon.  They come in a vacuum or mechanical secondary.  To much overkill with this carb?????????

Ryan, i would stay away from the speed demon, i had one & the metering was WAY off on my 440, plus they are not adjustable (screw in bleeds), I'll tell ya, i had a basic 4779 holley on my 383 & it ran great, but for about the same $$$$ you can get one thats fully adjustable WITH (screw in bleeds) like a QF & tuneing is much easier, i know picking a carb can be mind boggleing sometimes, So a basic 750dp is your best bet, that would be my pick for a novice like yourself, holley has proven themselves for years for a basic perf. style carb., don't get me wrong, i really like the demon carbs look, but when they are off, there OFF, & trying to get them dialed in can be a nightmare sometimes, so stay with something simple like a holley, my pick for a bolt on carb for the adverage engine & shut the hood & go are these.

600- 1850 series
750- 3310 series
most any holley "classic" style DPer.

i have an edelbrock 650 on my 440 works great :icon_smile_big:

870 Holley Avenger on mine and happy with it! I am .03 over, 10.5-1 flat tops. hyd cam, head work, big pan, high vol pumps, RPM intake, reworked dist.

I looked at the quickfuel carbs and they are nice looking but do they really work that much better then a regular holley?  I only got one recomendation for them?  Also whats the difference between a carb that specifies that its annular?

Ok i just got the car.  I am so excited about this thing.  Its my first charger and its my dream car.  I checked the manifold and its an edelrbrock tm6.  I also checked and the engine and transmission are the cars original.  the seller wasnt sure and i bought it cause i didnt care and wanted it anyways.  Ill have a lot of questions for sure though.

The TM6 is a really decent hot street/race manifold....definately overkill for a stock to mild 383. I would be looking to replace it with a dual plane manifold to increase bottom end power (torque) with the smaller displacement & short stroke 383.  :Twocents:

If you plan to build a lowdeck stroker 451-470 the TM6 will be perfect.  ;)

well i am hoping to get some new heads in the next few months but i dont know about tearing it all the way down and stroking it just yet.  I ordered a 750 double pumper today so i should have it tomorrow.  do you think the carb will have jets that are to large out of the box.  I have never messed with a holley before so i have no idea how far off that carb will be out of the box.

Glad you got your car :2thumbs:, the 750 4779 should be VERY close OOTB, i wouldn't mess with it, just put it on & the basic adjustments, i would do like Ron suggested on a different intake, i would be looking for a holley SD.

If you can wait on the heads, i would untill feb. of 2008, thats when 440Source "should" be getting theres in, they are only 900.00 complete, not bad for an aluminum head, BTW, i think i know who is supplying them :D, "ProComp", they already have some BBC aluminum heads flowing 440 or so CFM & on a mild cammed 454, they were getting 600+ horses.
