I'm home sick to today and sleeping when there is a pounding on the door and the dog goes crazy barking. I look out the window to see who is trying to knock down my door and there on the street I see a black Chevy truck towing a wrecked Honda on a trailer. Now without being prejudiced I'll try to be delicate and just say that these people are obviously from the 'other' side of town. They always come here this time of year when the city does a free street cleanup and they come salvaging metal from peoples trash piles.
Some kid is on my doorstep pounding on the door. When I open the door he asks me if I want to sell the old car and motions to the GTX behind the gate. Then his dad yells over and asks me if I want to sell. First I say hell no and then I tell them $50,000 and they can have it.
The dad then asks me what it is!
I told him that if he had to ask and didn't know then he didn't want to buy it. He yelled at me and said, don't worry, I know what it is, is it a Super Bee or a Coronet?
(the front plate is a vanity plate and says 'GTX' for that very reason, dumbass can't even read!)

I just closed the door and they began screaming obscenities at me and giving me a one finger salute as they drove off. 


Now I gotta keep an eye out for nighttime visitors, I'll keep the shotgun ready for them.

Yeah, I guess that's what really bugged me. They wanted my car just for scrap. That and pounding down my door just to ask an insulting question.
I should have let the dog out to talk to them for me.

I am not sure how your property is set up relation to your garage and other cars on your property. They could have wanted to see what you had.....been there done that but.....like you said

know the feeling only your gtx is worth alot more than my 74 charger.  I had a kud last week offer me 150 bucks, thats right, 150 for a running driving 74 charger SE.  Ive got bout 3000 or more wrapped up in it.  Then he makes the comment well i can only get 200 bucks for it at Kroots (local scrap yard)  I laughed.  Dont let them get to you and yeah keep the shotgun handy,

Yeah, that's a very good point. I try to be very polite and very understanding when people come and want to chat or ask if it's for sale. Most conversations are quite pleasant and some are really amusing. I've even found parts and other cars that way.  I guess I just get annoyed when they practically knock my door off it's hinges just to ask if they can buy it for scrap or to try to turn a quick buck on it. That's an obvious insult and waste of my time. On top of all that they yell obscenities at me when I turn them down. The older guys attitude was really confrontational from the start which also made me extra short on my fuse. You don't approach a guy asking to buy his car by insulting it to begin with.

Ok, so my paint isn't so wonderful right now but it's obviously not a derelict and not worth pounding my door down for. Brand new tires and wheels, a blower and a straight, rust free body hardly looks like a clunker.

The last time I had that it was because I had a water line break and the people were trying to talk to us. I had no way on knowing it was for the car otherwise I would have just watched them and let them leave.

I hear ya, but I never answer the door to starngers.  Usually, I will monitor them from the window or peep hole then see where else they go.  I think it's pretty rude for someone to pound on someone's door just for a car.  I would've broke out Mr .45.

This area is really quite crime free but you never know especially with these people coming in from other areas. Still, the outer door is locked, we have a trained German Shepherd and although I don't keep the shotgun out I do have a 9mm within reach.

I don't blame them at all for asking or for trying to make a few extra bucks. If they hadn't pounded on the door and had been more polite about asking all would be fine and I would have been happy to point them to a 280Z that I know they could buy for scrap.

It could have been a mishandled attempt for the truck driver dad to buy a car for his son.  Unless they specifically mentioned scrap.  its always possible they'd recognize it wasn't what they expected if you give a price on the high side of its value.  I can't say i'd be opening the gate to let them see what they're missing though.  Its always easy to say no thanks, not today, its not scrap to me yet.  (I've had a few cars that i'd consider letting get hauled off...wait, one did).

When my car was in the front garage, i'd get the occasional shopper interested in buying it, until they found out what it was, and that i know pretty much what it could be worth if put together again.  But if i was in dire straits, and someone caught me at the perfect time, there is a possibility someone lucky could actually find a survivor car intact.

I was at an auction in Topeka over the summer and a guy was selling EVERYTHING he owned in his autobody shop and his large building on his property. He lived just outside of town and didn't have any nearby neighbors. He went home one day for lunch and caught a couple guys in his bldg. loading up. As soon as he pulled up and seen them they had a gun in his face. It scared the shit out of him when they was all over his classics and seen everything he had. He ended up selling like 10 64 Chevy's with 2 being almost all done convertibles and a GTO clone vert and about 5 other vehicles. I guess he was moving also and then closed his shop too for whatever reason. I got a lot of good body tools and parts that day. I guess you never know anymore. I was gonna check on a permit to carry. I would hate to be carjacked when I get my Charger all done. I think I would have to shoot before handing over the keys.

That's why I keep my Charger in the garage all the time.  Stories like that raise all my paranoia's.  I live in a great area and the two times I did have to leave it in the driveway, I couldn't sleep all night.
And to think I used to get mad when I had a 69 and had a non stop barrage of tire kickers telling me I should paint it orange and put 01 on the doors.

I get those jackasses too. I keep my Charger at my mom's house. Every now and then I get a call from my sister telling me there's some guy asking if I'm selling it. I just tell her to tell them it is not and they go away.

I don't mind those people that much, but I've had a couple of annoying guys come up to me when I'm working on it (ie. pushing it from one spot on the driveway to another) and try to offer some stupid low amount, hoping to make a quick score. Then when you laugh at them or shake your head at their kind offer, they get insulted and start putting down your car - "Oh...its a 74?...nobody wants those anyway" or "Whatever, you'll never get more than $1000 for it anyway" (nevermind that I already told them I'm NOT selling it). Usually these are guys who claim to "buy old cars" or who "have a 340 Hemi engine that I'd put in it"

True, but I always assume that the person knows what they have and don't try to insult their intelligence (see my post above).

I use to keep my charger outside under a cover.  I came home one day from work and there were 2 guys looking at my car.  They even took the cover off.  Talk about getting pissed off.  I almost killed them. 

I also hate it when these people bug the hell out of you if it is for sale.  You can tell them 20 times that it's not and they still ask.  I'll tell people I want 20 grand.  Then, they argue for another half an hour.

Another amusing response would be to ask what they want to pay, when they come back with 1200 or some rediculously low figure, agree to sell him 1200.00s worth of the car, Tell him you'll bring it out to seal the deal, then go get a couple backup parts (like a spare ac compressor and an air breather, and say this is what you can buy for 1200.  His look would be entertaining.

Having a privacy fence and parking it out back is a good idea for those wanting to limit these encounters, having a garage out back behind the privacy fence is even better.  But i won't be keeping the door shut in the backyard garage, it gets kind of warm inside in summer.  Maybe an AC unit in the future?

I had a 57 Chevy for sale but everytime someone looked at it they wanted my Cutlass instead. I finally sold it. If you drive by the front of my house slow and the back garage is open you can barley see in it. I have an old Falcon visible out back but no one ever asks about it. So if they see my Charger out back all in pieces maybe they think it's a large Falcon

I've done that before.  I had a local GM guy pester me about my first 69 Charger, wanting to buy it for $500 everyday for a week.  After that, anytime he tried bug me about it, I would pull out the spare tire and rusty jack bottem to lay at his feet.  He then would say "What is this for?", to which I replied "The amount of my Charger you can buy with your offer", which would get a shake of the head from him as he left.  He finally gave up a few months later after buying another GM "toy" to work on......

     I parked my 69 at a car show with 3300 cars. I had multiple offers. One guy looked at my car and told me where I lived. I stopped leaving the garage door open. Out of 3300 cars at the GM power train plant in Toledo, Ohio, I was one of only three second gen Chargers on the property. This is one very large small town.
