99 cougar trans question

  Has anybody had this simular problem and know what to do to fix this.....sorry that it's a FoMoCo question but I figured that someone here would probably know the answer.

   My son has a 99 mercury cougar with a v6 and an automatic.  The transmission started pumping trans fluid out of the dipstick tube and we don't have an answer why. A friend thought that there was a vent valve on the trans and said it could be plugged.

  Anybody?
