Help find Steve Fossett

If you read the news, you know about the search for Steve Fossett. The adventurer and his aircraft disappeared about two weeks ago.

Fossett did not file a flight plan. So rescuers are unsure where to look for him. But he is believed to be in southwestern Nevada.

Fossett's friends and family are asking for your help. No, they don't need you to fly to Nevada for a ground search.

Rather, they're asking that you help review satellite images. Google has gathered recent images. Hopefully, Fossett's plane will appear in one.

To get involved, visit Amazon's Mechanical Turk site. It will present you with images to review. If you see something, simply flag the image and leave a comment.

You'll need to have an Amazon account or register in order to help out.

I don't mean to come across as a dick or disrespect someone who may be fighting for his life but Fosset is/was about as experienced a pilot as one could be yet he didn't file a flight plan or, apparently, tell anyone where he was flying to before leaving other than, reportedly, that he was going to be looking for a dry lake bed in Nevada to use for a land speed record breaking attempt. That's just irresponsible.

maybe you should watch the news a little.  He is a guy who has been lost for like a few weeks.  He took off in his plane and hasn't been seen or heard from since.  They kinda think that he crashed somewhere in the navada mountains.

Steve Fossett, the millionaire adventurer, disappeared Sept. 3, 2007 after taking off from a ranch for a brief recreational flight in a single-engine plane.

Mr. Fossett, 63, was a veteran aviator known for his quests to set world records. In 2002, on his sixth attempt, he became the first person to fly around the world uninterrupted in a hot air balloon. Last year, he completed the longest nonstop flight in aviation history, flying 26,389 miles in 76 hours in a lightweight experimental plane. He also set and chased records on land and sea, including the round-the-world speed record for sailboats.

On his flight over Nevada, he was believed to have been scouting locations for a planned assault on the world land-speed record. —

He's an "millionaire and adventurer" according to the news. He spends his time trying to set world records.

Unfortunately, less experienced pilots usually do things more by-the-book. Even excellent pilots make mistakes - but many believe they are good enough to overcome them. Vanity has caused a lot of accidents. A flight plan isn't required for VFR flight so he didn't technically do anything wrong/illegal. Irresponsible maybe, but I know of very few VFR pilots who actually file unless they are in training. He actually carries a locator that most pilots wouldn't have but it doesn't appear that it was activated.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

I wonder if I dissapeared a few weeks ago flying around, Steve Fossett would go to Amazon to search for me? Things that make you go hmmm...  :scratchchin:

Maybe he was looking to "vanish" from society just like Elvis did.  :icon_smile_big:

It is easy to disappear in Nevada - especially if you know which "area" to fly near. :scratchchin:

Unfortunately I'm sure Fossett's dead already.  I thought that after about two days.  Too much transponder/radio gear in any modern plane for him not to be calling for help.

------------------------------------------------------------

The issue about not filing a flight plan out of TOO MUCH experience is very real.

Remember Aaron Ralston?  The mountain-climber who got trapped under a rock in a gorge, and ended up cutting his own hand off to get himself out after a couple of days?  I went to a talk that guy gave, and it was totally that issue that got him lost.  He'd been doing all kinds of hard-ass climbs by himself for years and being very careful about leaving plans behind.  But then he went for just a little "easy afternoon trip" out of his normal way and that's what nearly killed him.

70charger_boy

I think it is so sad when someone like Paris Hilton or OJ Simpson gets 24 hour 7 day a week coverage, but a legend like Steve Fossett can't even make it in the back pages.

As far as not filing a flight plan it is not required when flying VFR.  I usually don't file if im flying a c172 or something small.  When you get clearance from ATC they will have your transponder code and will know when you are in trouble.
