Weed is actually about 5 times worse than cigarettes for your lungs.  That and people tend to hold it in alot longer.  I've never understood that argument.
     Everything in life can be bad for you.  I have  a friend that has been in gymnastics since she was very young.  She didn't get her first period until she was 18 years old, and her doctor told her that she may never be able to have kids.
Everything is deadly in the right dose, yes even water.  I just want to know what happened to the concept of personal responsibility?

Never been a smoker, although I grew up with a smoking Dad, Im never offended by anyone lighting up though, I figure its their thing...I also watched Flinstones alot and thought those old commercials were kind of neat. I really have a much bigger problem with alcoholics driving cars than secondhand cigarette smoke, but I think the govt,. needs to stay out of all of our bad habits (including junk food- thats next if you all dont believe it!) hang the drunk drivers (literally) if they are caught, but dont outlaw the liquor. I believe were all on this Earth to experiance freedom of choice among other things and with the govt. outlawing everything under the sun how can we learn right from wrong?

I just saw a movie called Hollywodd land last week on HBO.  It was the movie with Adrian Brody that investigated George Reeves (TV Superman) death.  The movie was set in the late 50's and everybody in the movie was chain smoking.  That was the culture back then. 

I guess now, the country is too politically correct to smoke.

I just saw a movie called Hollywodd land last week on HBO.  It was the movie with Adrian Brody that investigated George Reeves (TV Superman) death.  The movie was set in the late 50's and everybody in the movie was chain smoking.  That was the culture back then. 

I guess now, the country is too politically correct to smoke.

I want to see that flick & will have to see when it's on again. 

I know what you mean by the old movies & TV shows where everyone smoked, I remember it well. I think most of the adults in my family when I was a kid smoked. My parents, my grandparents, a lot of aunts, uncles, & a lot of the family friends that were always over around the holidays. Sometimes the room had a gray fog in it & the walls & ceiling had nicotine stains. Of course I didn't know any better as a little kid, but when I was in my early teens I started to complain. The car rides in winter with the windows up & both parents smoking would really suck.

Once I had my own car, & one or both parents were in it, the no smoking rule was in effect. They hated it, but respected it. The same went for when I got my house, & if anyone wants to smoke there's an ashtray outside on the railing of the deck. When my grandfather was still alive & he visited, he was the only one to bitch about not being able to smoke in the house & said he wasn't coming back. Oh well, he never did. I do get a kick out of seeing smokers at my house in winter, they stand on the deck freezing, finish less than half the cigarette, then hurry back inside with the nicotine fix satisfied. 

I don't preach & dictate to smokers, but I definitely don't like it. There were several restaurants, bars, or clubs that I just stopped going to because of the excessive smoke. It's not that I just don't like smoke, it kills my sinuses, stuffs up my nose, smells like s**t, & leaves you wreaking like an ashtray that's full. I couldn't imagine smoking it if it does all that just being near it. I also can't get over the cost of a pack of butts, it's 2 to 3 times the price of a gallon of gas. 

I don't think banning smoking in public, or not seeing cigarettes on TV & in the movies that much is the political correctness, as much as it is that there are more non smokers that are just sick & tired of putting up with the smoke.

I'm also sick of seeing obese people everywhere I go. maybe we should stop with the fast food commercials. Stop putting heavy set comedians on T.V....

I respect your opinion... it's one of the most thought out ones so far. But there are many other conditions that are unhealthy that are not as attacked as smoking. I don't see a scale in front of a resterant saying "If your too fat you can't eat here"

obesity is a lot more prevalent then smokers. They are also a burden on the health care system. Why aren't they as chastised as smokers.... ohhh because that would be mean?

Some smokers I agree... smell like an ashtray. I personally am in sales. I smoke as well. But I clean my hands and use breath strips. When I go into a Doctors office for work they never know I smoke. I also don't smoke in my car.

I don't know... people go back and forth with this subject all the time. Almost every board i'm on has a thread like this. Maybe it's just an easy target? I'm thinking of starting a thread about obesity and Obese women in spandex

I'm not ignoring that ... I'll agree with that. I don't mind smoking outside. I always ask people if it's alright to light up.. I'm one of the odd courteous smokers.

I'm just pointing out that the whole "Marketting to Kids" "burden on the health car system" "Killing ourselves" "smell like something" is not just limited to smokers..

It just seems o.k. to single us out because picking on fat people is mean

Ok, just to be clear, I don't support a ban. I just don't want to have to deal with it inside.

I also think that endlessly raising taxes on smokes under the false pretense that it'll help end smoking rather than what the real reason is, revenue, is dead wrong.

For what it's worth, I quit almost 9 years ago.

Small indoor places with cigarette smoke is tough, & I was glad when smoking was banned in restaurants & bars. There is one place, a restaurant/bar that has live music on a regular basis, that had two separate rooms long before any state had a ban. The owner didn't like smoke & had a glass partition between the bar & the restaurant with the stage.

The name is "The Towne Crier Cafe" in Pawling, NY. Of all the small venues around, this one was my favorite. My wife & I would let the owner know we enjoyed his place quite a bit & that the no smoking policy was one of the reasons. When I did go to other places without a smoking ban, Pennsylvania still allows it, I was quickly reminded how much I liked the ban.

I also agree with the fast food/overweight problem being a health issue, but where do you draw the line on banning things? There's no easy way to differentiate how much abuse someone will be able to tolerate before it effects them. Everyone is different & everyone seems to have an "Uncle Joe" that smoked 3 packs of non filtered Camels everyday, & lived to be 102 years old.

There are also a lot of overweight people who live a long time. I guess the important things are moderation & knowledge, but it also has to do with choice & responsibility. If you overdo anything, it's bad for you & will probably kill you off early. Smoke a lot, & chances are you'll get a related disease, but keep it to yourself. Sky dive 10 times a day, & chances are the chute will malfunction at some point, but just don't land on me coming down.

I know overweight issues, as well as other things, will add to the final cost of health care, but I think it's too difficult to list things that don't directly affect a bystander. The same goes for the baggy pants thread. How the hell can someone actually determine the baggyness limits on a pair of pants? What happens to all the plumbers with plumbers crack that don't even follow fashion trends?

For my 17th birthday I got a Zippo lighter engraved with my initials from my parents!  The 50's & 60's were a different time.  You were just expected to smoke.  Even after quitting in '76 it took a few years to NOT like the smell of cigarette smoke.  I don't think it should be banned completely, but do question those who start these days with all the health information now available.  Mom died of lung cancer a few years back at 79 and managed to keep smoking up to the day she died.  She was in denial that the smoking had anything to do with the cancer.   Bob

I smoke and often feel like an outcast.  They banned smoking in public, here in Rhode Island and whenever I smoke I have to have at least one person say to me "Those things can kill you"  I simply reply by reaching down the small of my back, pull out my .45 and say "So, can this"
