Just bought an Aluminumn air scoop with butterfly flaps. Went to measure where to cut the hood on my 73 charger 440, and the carb is offset to the left(passenger side) about 2 inches! IS THIS NORMAL? If it is what do i do with my scoop?

yes they are off set to the left abit,.. i dunno about your particualr hood scoop alighnment problem, but enuff folks have modded their cars for racing and such with scoops that i'm sure there is good info yet to come..
good luck. great question.  :popcrn:

Yep, that offset is perfectly normal.  Mopar engines back then (don't know if this is still the case with today's vehicles) were offset to the passenger's side about that much.  I don't know for certain why they did that, although steering column & gearbox clearance is a distinct possibility.

As for how to handle the hole in your hood, I don't know what to tell ya.  If you look through the hood scoop on 6-pack lift-off hood cars, you can see pretty clearly that the air cleaner is shifted more to the passenger's side, so they didn't try to hide it much.

Thanks for the info-got worried there a moment.
Now if i had  a normal fiberglass hoodscoop it would be centered, but I have those type of scoops that waffer over the hood and sit right on top of the carb, so the only way for me to not worry about the isometrics is to not use it :brickwall:----on the other hand :scratchchin: i dont think too many people are gonna sit there and wonder if my hood scoop is off to the left 2 inches-or even notice it. Anyone try it?

the scoop on my custom made hood sits perfectly centered to the body lines the hole on the bottom of the hood is somewhat wider on either side to accept the air cleaner (the triangluar bowl type i had in the car at the time) But if i install it on my charger now i would have to modify the opening to accept the K&L i now have on the 446...
i'll link to my hood scoop thread...

terrible one

Board member "72Charger" has a hood scoop like yours, and you're right, it is offset. He's got some pictures for you to go by here:

I was told the offset is from the steering gearbox also. When I put the sixpack scoop on my hood i laid out the center line of the carb front to back and side to side.I then cut out the diameter of my air cleaner including  2" for clearnace.I then mounted the scoop centered on the hood. When you look in the scoop you can see that there is an offset of the air cleaner to the center body line. :yesnod:
I have seen some people make an adapdter that will mount to the carb ,and then shift the air cleaner over the desired amount.
