The problem you will have is not with the converter....it's with the engine. It won't behave anywhere near stock because you will be way overcammed. Big cams do not like stock converters. It will be difficult to tune because the converter will pull the engine down at idle. The big cam will also kill your bottom end power and that is why you need to compensate with a higher stall speed.  :yesnod: If you mismatch the parts the car will end up being much slower than it is now.  :icon_smile_blackeye:

Honestly, i don't see the logic in building an entire car around a mismatched cam.  :eek2:

The cam is the last thing to get picked after the rest of the combo is sorted out.  ;)

If you go with that cam and a looser converter....buy a quality unit and it will be tight at lower engine speeds, just like a stock converter. The MP converters aren't known for their efficiency at low speeds....they feel loose and sloppy until the stall speed is reached.

The way i see it is that you'll be going through waaaay too much trouble & expense to run a mismatched cam profile (new cam & lifters/converter/flexplate etc...) when all you need to do is buy the right cam in the first place....and save yourself a ton of money and work in the process.  :Twocents:

Ron, a friend of mine used down here the same specs camshaft on his car but on SB with a stock converter without problems. I know is not the same compare same specs on BB or SB, but close

BTW, this is another way to ask the quetion sercahing for the answer I want ( quoting from the other thread ):

another way to get the answer I want to get:
With stock converter what I'm not exactly sure about stall speed, somebody told me around 1800, I'm in neutral at iddle, then gear the car to Drive and car start to moves AT IDDLE, no need to press gas pedal, so If I'm on traffic in fact I'll need to press the brakes to keep the car stopped. In fact on street with a light slope, the car is able to keep on place geared in D without brakes pressed.

I'll be able to have that with any performance torque converter ( talking about the examples I posted 166K and 175K ) like with the stock one ?

I'm not saying BTW I'll use those MP converters yet, I'm just using the values and chart like an example. PTC stilll haven't answered the email.

Actually, comparing a SB and BB stock converter is like comparing apples and oranges. A SB factory converter is rated at a much higher stall than a BB conveter....1600 vs 2400. Car weight, gearing and other things can also have a big impact. A small, lightweight car is more forgiving than a heavy b-body.

If the smallblock is in a lighter car then the comparison is not valid.  ;)

I know you don't want to hear it but that cam in a 400ci engine with less than 2800 stall and 3.55 gears is a big mistake. The 238* cam won't make much power below 2500 rpm and won't really come on until 3000.....that is a fact and you can't change it.

call turbo action or coan.  i sure as hell hope ptc biulds a better converter than they do tranny! i talked my best friend into using his crap because of all the hipe. the pile of junk wouldnt shift correctly from the start(turbo 400)  in a mid 11 second car. never make it to the track and the tranny lost 3rd gear with in 500 street miles.   however the 400 i biult him (first ever gm tranny for me) is still going strong and seen lots of laps before he passed away.

ive never delt with this guy but ive heard nothing but good about him.  http://www.ultimateconverter.com/   ive never personally delt with coan but im pretty damn amazed at the service they give a good friend of mine.   he has learned some hard lessons like, dont over heat your tranny  buy testing your trans break to the point that the front seal melts out and catches the car on fire. but coan went way out of there way to get him up and running in a timly maner and has even called him on a saturday to make sure the parts had arrived and he wasnt having any issues.

I agree with Ron, you'll need at least a 3000 flash, a 3100-3200 would be best IMO, i just got back my TCI 10" from PTC, this streetfighter converter has the Balloon plate for nitrous, the fin angles were tighter then anticipated, so behind my 440, it would've only flashed 2800, so Kenny loosened it up a tad to 3200 flash, but i'll garauntee it'll still have very good street manners, even with 3.55s, most likely just foot brake to 1700 or so, i would have been fine with 3000 with my cam (224/234 @50), but i wanted to make sure this tank would get from the start, the cams on strong at 2200, don't know exactly were the torque curve is on this combo of mine, but 300-500 RPMs above max torque is a good area to shoot for to lock up the converter, the cam will play a big roll in this, i'm guessing mines around 26-2800, so if yours is the same, a 2600 stall won't cut it, especially in a heavier charger.

You can call Kenny or Tim at PTC & tell them Joe Gallo sent you, i'm sure they will recammend a 9.5" 31-3200 stall, but don't quote me :slap:, there the experts.

I have used 2 of there converters in the past, an 11" & a 9.5", they were both dead on

When I built the tran's in the '69 I had, I was told to give them a call and talk with them about a converter. Granted I didn't know what gear was in the car at the time, what the weight was, and as far as I knew, it had a factory spec cam in it.... What I now know about the car would have helped things out a bit.... Anyway, called them up, talked with them (btw, didn't take them long to answer the phone), and decided to get there 11" converter. I have had no problems out of while i had the car, and as far as I know now, the guy who bought the car hasn't had any problems (other than it shifting to hard for his taste ).
