I have mp distributor with adjustable mechanical advance, I have same problem another guy had timing coming in to soon. Base timing is 11*, 38* total all in at 2000 rpm, I read on that post that mp dis. come with a medium and heavy springs, it said to keep medium spring and replace the heavy spring with a lighter spring ?  Is this  right, wouldn't changing the the heavy spring with a lighter one make the timing come in even sooner :shruggy: I may be wrong I just want to check before I make any changes. I want to raise the base timing to around 15* and have 36* to 38* all in at around 3000 rpm. Also, I read that the dis. I have is made by mallory and they make an advance curve kit for it does any one know the part #.

Alan, if its the Mallory version, it should have the gold adjustable plate with 2 lock screws, you can set that style dizzy at any curve you want, you can even lock it out, now if is indeed the Mallory one, it should come with the 2 light springs, you can tell pretty easy by looking down below the PU coil plate :2thumbs:

jg68, It is the mallory version, I adjusted the advance, I bumped the initial timing from 11* to 15* total is 37* all in at about 1850-2000 RPM. I want total all in at around 2600-3000. The dis. does look like it has light springs, if I change the light springs to a heaver spring wouldn't that slow the timing down and make the timing all in at a higher RPM :shruggy: I looked on summit mallory sells an advance kit # 29014 that looks like the right kit, comes with springs and advance keys. What do you think, car seems to run good at 15* initial and 37 total, but I think it would be better if it was all in at 2800-3000 :shruggy:

                                                      thanks, Alan :2thumbs:

PS: You were right on with my carb problem, I adjusted the throttle plates now the idle screws work better, the front screws are 1 turn out and on the rear screws the left one is 1 turn out, the right one is still only 1/2 turn out. The car runs good idles good, I don't know if this is a problem only thing I can think of doing is pulling carb apart and making sure there is no dirt in idle circuit. I don't think so cause when had the fuel bowls off to change the jets inside of carb was very clean. thanks for your help :2thumbs:

Alan,

Using a heavier spring will slow the rate of advance down. I would start by replacing just one spring and see where the curve comes in....experiment a bit.  ;)

Good work on the carb.....the 750dp'er is an aweome carb on a mild 440  :2thumbs:

Thanks Ron, I was waiting to hear from you. I got the advance kit coming, I got the initial at 16* total 37* now I just need to slow the advance down, its all in at around 1850-2000. I will try changing one spring with a heaver one, I want to get the timing all in at around 2800-3000 :2thumbs: Car runs pretty good with the 750dp'er, there really isn't a big difference from my 770 avenger. But I'm still tuning I think when I get the timing set that will make a difference :2thumbs: I still have that mp cam in there :rotz: Thats my next change voodoo 60303, in a couple weeks :2thumbs:

                                  Thanks, Alan :2thumbs:

Good to hear on the carb Alan :2thumbs:, it never hurts every so often to spray out the air bleeds, they can get stopped up pretty quik.

Like Ron said, put one heavier spring in & see where it goes

I had the same problem with my timing coming in too soon cause of the light weight springs.  For the time being, I had to back the initial idle advance down to about 11-12*.  I would love to get it at 15* to get better performance out of it.

Where were you able to get the advance springs?  The Mr. Gasket ones that I got were light weight springs also.  I need heavier ones. :popcrn:

resq302, You need to make sure your mp distributor is the mallory advance version, with the two adjusting screws as stated above in this post :2thumbs: If it is you have to adjust the advance so you can bump your timing up to 15*. I did this but my total advance still comes in too soon, so now I need to change springs to slow the advance down, and have it come at a higher RPM. I ordered an advance kit from summit I put the link below click on it, it will show you what kit to get :2thumbs: I have not got my kit yet should be here Tuesday, the kit comes with springs and advance keys. I'm going to try what Ron said and change one spring to a heaver one, I'll will let you know how it goes and what spring or springs I used to dial my timing in :2thumbs:
