Well i have a chance to get a pretty nice general lee so i need to decide if i should keep my 1970 dodge charger 500 or sale it. I pulled it out front of my dads hanger and put a for sale sign on the windshield but i am wondering if i should keep it and the general lee. What would you guys do?

HAZZARDJOHN

If you are just a mild general Lee fan and more of a charger fan, which is why I guess you are asking than look at the situation this way. Disreguard that it is a GL and look at the car, is it Nicer, Rarer, better optioned, worth more than the 70? than you also have to ask if it is more appealing to you. I'd rather have a 68-69 than a 70, but that is my preference. Remember a GL is just a paint job and stickers.

I agree, make sure it is a nice charger first so later if you didnt want it to be a general you could paint it or just remove the decals. Having a general is alot of fun especially if you love kids!

My thoughts exactly John.  Also, if you can afford to keep both, I would!! :yesnod:

:iagree:

How about pictures of both so we can make a more informed decision? :yesnod: Personally I think I would stay away from the GLs, just because I'm more about Chargers than I am the DOH and I think the GL is more about The Dukes than it is about Chargers. If I were to ever consider buying a GL I'd have to figure on body work and paint too because it would not stay orange under my ownership. No offense to any GL owner here but it's just not me.

Blakcharger440

The 1970 Charger will always be more rarer than the 68-69 Charger and that is depending upon the options that the 69 has but the 70 was not as mass produced. Despite the orange paint and stickers on that 69 it all comes down to what you want. If its just a plain bottom of the barrel 69 with orange paint on it and your 70 500 is in good shape then I would keep your C500.......and paint it orange if ya want.

Troy

But a "rare" 70 500 isn't all that collectible/desirable.

It depends on what you really want. A GL can be a blast to own but all the attention could get old after a while. Underneath the orange paint and decals it's still a 69 Charger which is always a good thing. Keep both if you feel the need to own more than one car (which is a blessing and a curse). Keep the nicest one if there's a big difference and you can't keep both. I personally would sell both and buy a 68... ;)

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

69charger2002

troy is right. a GL is fun, but it does get old after a while. and unless you just crave attention, even that part gets old quick too. you can't go anywhere without getting pulled over or almost run into by picture takers. personally i like 69 bodies better than 70's, but if you can't keeep both, keep in mind one important factor.. which one has the BEST body.. down the road after the GL fad fades for you, the important thing is that you still have a nice body to work with

I agree that a 70 Charger 500 is not all that rare or collectible...but neither is a plain 69. Its all about what ya prefer. Sell both, save up your coin and then.......... buy a 70 Cuda!

"A GL is nothing but a paintjob and some stickers."

Take heed of this.

You'd be wise to make the decision based on the condition/value of the two cars themselves.
Not to mention what car/year that you really want in the first place.

a plain 69, not collectible? wow I guess i better get rid of mine   :scratchchin:

dpm68

Yea, I'd get the general if the conditions were right and the price was reasonable. THEN I would render it back to a non-general and revel in the fact that I have removed another orange one from the glut. And it's a shame, as I really like orange cars...just not ones with dixie flags, CB antennas, and numbers.

I think pretty much any Charger is a collectible to any owner. I think the word "collectible" is being used as a "rarity" term in this thread. To a true money bags, a '70 500 or base '69 Charger wouldn't be very sought after. Pretty much anything similar from '68 falls into the same category.

But to comment on the original question, I would sooner drive my car off a cliff, than put 01 decals on it.  :Twocents:

I disagree that a plain 69 isn't collectible. These days it truly doesn't matter they are all worth stupid money. In my opinion a 69 will always be worth more than a 70 in the exact condition, exact options lets say. Go with the 69 if its nice and priced right
Jeff

jaak

buy the General clone, charge 30 bucks a ticket, jump it over something, and take the huge profits and buy any dream car you want, lol.

Thats it exactly! That is what I was trying to say Chris. I dont think a 68 or 69 is any more valuable than a 70. It all depends upon what ya like. I prefer the 70 for its 1 year only list of great options in that particular body style.

Chargen69

The reason IMO that a plain 69 is worth more than most 70's (in the same condition) is because there are more people willing to pay the stupid $$ for a 69 because it has had more publicity than the 70s.

There are plenty of people that wouldnt own a mopar (i know it's hard to believe) except a 69 charger.

let the games begin  :)

I guess I'll help you out and take that plain old 69 off your hands for $5,000, but remeber you owe me!

Keep the 70 and pass on the GL. It seems like their flooding the market with clones and the hype will start to die down. In the alternative, as others have stated, value the GL as a 69 and don't give it any extra value for being a GL and decide if its still a good car/deal.

A GL can always be reversed. So, if you want to have some GL fun with the option of doing something else down the road, then go for it. I LOVE seeing GL's put back to standard Charger specs. Just because I love a standard Charger as much as I love a GL, and as stated earlier, the market is being flooded with clones (usually not all that good). It is just a matter of time before many General 'uniforms' get stripped away in favor for a factory color. If its your car, do what you want with it. If you want to keep it a GL, then go for it. If you want to paint it plaid with GM interior, then there will be nothing holding you back. Take the Charger and make it what you please.
