Well, long story short, I started painting my engine and buttoning it up a little bit (oil pan, timing cover).  I was thinking that it was all good, and then I realized I had a box of parts in my truck, an especially noisy one.  I then realize, oh crap, I didn't put my oil slinger on before I put on the timing cover.  Do I need the oil slinger?  Or do I have to take everything apart to put it back on?  I've already permatexed the gaskets and don't want to mess it up.  What should I do?

I've heard you don't need one with a double roller timing chain (won't fit).  Fact or fiction?

The slinger does 2 things.

1) It (SLINGS) oil onto the chain.

2) It helps to keep most of the oil off the front crank seal.

Answer to your slinger question: YES, you need it...

I did the same exact thing.  I was fighting with the timing chain cover for what seemed like all day, then when it was finally on I noticed the oil slinger sitting on a table.   :flame:  I almost left it off but decided it must exist for a reason so I took it apart and put it back on.

the direction sheet that came with my gasket set said to put silicone on the bottom corners at the intersection of the oil pan.  Is it really necessary to put it on the whole gasket?  I don't think I've ever had an oil leak from that spot on any car I've had.
