I am about to take the plunge into my dream car.  A 1968 Charger that had a 383 in it.  What should I look for to get her moving?  I havn't a clue as to what years engine/tranny are compatible.  I've read and searched, and 383/440 swaps are no problem bolting up.  But I've also read that motorhome tranny's won't fit.  That mid 70's motors don't have as much performance.  Any help and info would be greatly appreciated.

Since an unknown engine should probably get a rebuild after this many years anyway, that puts the performance level at wherever you want it to be really.  As for transmissions, yes motorhomes and some pickups had shorter tailstocks.  Most any big block 727 from 66 to 74 should interchange without major headaches.  There are years and applications outside this generalization (and exceptions within it) but staying with that should get you where you want.

Great, thanks guys!  I got lucky and found a 440 and a 727 still attached!  The project begins.
